From the outside it looks like a plane house, but in the inside allready from the entrance it looks like a traditional style ryokan. The staff is very friendly, but unfortunately there are some rules like you have to be back before 11pm. and you may only take baths between 7am-9am and 5pm - 10pm. And there are no wifi... More

We booked at the Nihonkan as it was pretty much the only budget accommodation available in Kyoto on short notice. Whilst we appreciated being able to stay in a traditional room, the hotel is in need of complete refurbishment. The lavatories are communal (although literally just next to our room) and sinks for face washing and toothbrushing were on a... More

We stayed here for two nights. As other reviewers have stated this place is Japanese ryokan-style, with mattresses on tatami mats on the floor. We didn't have a private bath so used the shared facilities, which were clean enough, certainly better than most hostels I have stayed at (personally I would class this place as more of a hostel than... This hotel is clean, and close to the Kyoto train station. It's good value, but don't expect a lot of frills. It's Japanese style accommodation -- futon on the floor, no beds. Some rooms have baths, but usually you need to use the community bath in the basement. It's very clean, but older folks may have a difficult time with... More

It's a traditional Japanese hotel minutes walk from JR Kyoto station. The price is fairly reasonable, especially considering that the room is pretty big. The place is not new, but the deco in the room is very Japanesey and cool. You sleep on futons (cushions) on the tatami (straw mat flooring). The bath is shared (I only stayed 1 night... More

My husband and I just returned from a trip to Japan, in which we spent 3 nights at Ryokan Nihonkan, and we are so glad we did! It is less than a 5 minute walk from Kyoto station, so it is centrally located to many sightseeing locations, and it is in a quiet area. Our room was a basic ryokan... More
