We (1 adult 2 children) stayed in here mid-march and paid for a package that also included breakfast. I did not want to pay for the Kaiseki dinner as my kids are picky eaters. Positives: - The location is ideal for the Gion area as everything is in walking distance. - The place is spotless, very clean and a very... More

Stayed for 2 nights and l wished I could stay here a lifetime... Location is further away from the main train station, in the older part of Kyoto, walking distance to main tourist sites and well connected by bus to most temples. The ryokan guests are mainly local Japanese, but the staff can manage some English and are very helpful.... More

First time we tried Ryokan in Japan and surprisingly pleasant memorise we got out from Gion Shinmonso. Staffs are very polite and attentive, facilities are very good and room (tatami) is spacious and clean. This was the first time i ever been to Kyoto, had no idea my way around this city. Did took us a bit of time to... More

Stayed one night (two rooms) with our adult children visiting from the US. My wife and I have stayed in other ryokan but this was the first stay for the kids. From the street, this looks like a traditional city hotel. However, the rooms are a nice mix of traditional tatami and western convenience. I would recommend having the kaiseki... More

Thank you for staying at Gion Shinmonso the other day. We were very glad to meet you and spend time with you. I can remember you well, I have thought you are lovely family. Your children stayed at the renewal guest room and it is only this room type with private bath. We have two public baths and two private... More

My husband and I were on our 21 day honeymoon in Japan and decided to "splurge" on a ryokan. While sourcing for different ryokans in Kyoto, which are all very expensive by the way, I stumbles upon this little establishment that was only charging USD 130 a night. Having read all the good reviews online, I bought us a one... More

Thank you for staying at Gion Shinmonso the other day. We were very glad to meet you and spend time with you. We will prepare your dinner in your room and we usually ask dinner time when you check-in. Though most staff can not speak English well, but they are trying to speak English to have communication with you. Breakfast... More

This was our first experience with a japanese-style hotel (ryokan), and we certainly don't regret it. The staff was very kind and welcoming, and the rooms were very pleasant. We had our kaiseki-style dinner served in the banquet room, even if usually guests prefer to have it in their room. Go there if you are on vacation for sight-seeing and... More

A beautiful, tranquil and wonderfully located ryokan (just off of Shijo-dori, the main shopping centre. The street itself is lined with restaurants and places to drink). The ryokan has some lovely traditional elements, such as small zen gardens and traditional instrumental music in the reception area, screens with simple paintings in the rooms, tatami mats, tea sets and low, elegantly... My 9-year-old son and I stayed at Gion Shinmonso, looking for a ryokan experience. It was perfect for us. The location is good--quiet, but within walking distance of Higashiyama and also the subways. The staff was the best part--friendly, hospitable, helpful. Our room was very comfortable. We had breakfast both mornings, and a formal dinner in our room the second... More

My room had 2 function rooms opposite, a pantry next door on one side and a staff room on the other. Below was a piano bar and the window was near a busy street. The hotel noise stopped about 11pm and started again at 6am. I asked to move but the other 2 floors were booked to high school children.... More
