We spent 3 nights in Kyoto recently and were only able to spend 2 nights at Gion Hatanaka. We spent the first night at a different ryokan that billed itself as "high-end" and so we were able to benchmark the two. Hatanaka also came highly recommended from a friend from Tokyo and it didn't dissapoint. The food was spectacular as... More

Our easter holiday in Osaka and Kyoto is one memorable trip! The place is so clean compare to other cities in Asia we have been to. The Japanese are very courteous, helpful (in spite of they cant speak English fluently, they will get out of their way to help especially in directions). Kyoto is a wonderful place to go, traces... Was a bit skeptical because of relatively low rating. Had to choose this because little availability near Easter weekend and had a last-minute vacation in Japan. Was very glad this worked out. Location is superb. Taxis knew how to get there. Can walk to Yasaka shrine, Kiyomizudera, Gion, Pontocho, and Shinjodorimachi (shopping center areas). Could also walk to Sanjusengendo if... More

We were recommended to this property by a friend from Japan who is very familiar with Kyoto and it did not disappoint. Our room had three sections to it,that could all be separately closed off, plus a very comfortable yet small bathroom. The larger of the rooms was set up as a living room and then converted in the evening... More

Traveled to Japan and stayed in Kyoto for 2 nights at Hatanaka. We used Amex travel to help us choose ryokan as there were so many that looked nice. We wanted to be close to shops, shrines and Gion and this place was perfect. We were greeted and shown to our room and all about room by wonderful staff. The... More

Stayed here in March 2009 on a company trip (a mixed group of japanese and english speaking foreigners). Typical japanese service from the minute we alighted from our bus at the ryokan. The building style was traditional, but refurbished (not brand new tatami etc, but not worse-for-wear). Everything was spotlessly clean and in good working order. The futons were highly... More

When I previously stayed in Kyoto was a business hotel, I had decided ago going to a" Ryokan" inn What is said and the long-established, so-called "Shinise", such as Tawara-ya or hiiragi-ya,its difficult and impossible to stay in with my elementary school children. "You're welcome foreigners" Hatanaka, maybe my children feel free and ease, do not resist even the Cub ,and... More

My husband and I have just come back from a wonderful weekend in Kyoto at the beautiful ryokan, Hatanaka. Ideally located in the heart of Gion, we walked everywhere, even though it is mid-Winter. Although it wasn't as cheap as some ryokan in Kyoto we couldn't fault the place and experience. Staff were friendly and helpful with good English generally.... More

I went to this Ryokan with my American husband after Shinto wedding. The service was superb and we still dream going back to this Ryokan after a year of the stay. Their Kaiseki Dinner was not cheap, but yes, it was fully authentic and worth of paying the bill. The menu had a chef's name written along with all food... More

We spent quite some time in and out of the Pontocho area trying to catch a glimpse of maiko but with no luck, we went back to our hotel near Kyoto station disappointed indeed. Most of our trip was spent near Kyoto station, but had reserved a Maiko dinner show and stay at Gion Hatanaka for one night. This experience... More
