We were here in October 2011 when the forest foliage was intensely coloured and the skies were clear and blue. The Yumoto Cyouza was so in keeping with its surroundings from every aspect - the building seemed to be made from beautiful old wood and the food was incredible - by far the best food experience we had in Japan....

I stayed at Yumoto Choza in Autumn 2009.
The ryokan is situated in a stunning location in Okuhida, beautiful mountains all around, and in my case all the bright bold autumn colours. I have stayed in quite a few ryokan in Japan now and Yumoto seemed to be quite luxurious in its detail.

We stayed at the Yumoto Choza for two nights, and I deffinitely recommend it.
Getting there is tiring and you need almost an entire day if you are coming from Tokyo or Kyoto, but once you get there all the effort seems to pay off.

Yumoto Choza had a tiny mention in the Japan Lonely Planet, and I decided to go there with my parents and some friends for Christmas.
The ryokan itself is beautiful... low wooden beams, tatami floors, winding corridors with traditional art on the walls. the bedrooms were large and very comfortable, with a table during the day, and soft futons rolled...
