I've stayed in Varkala on numerous occasions and Kaiya House is easily the best place I've stayed. It's clean, mosquito proof and attractively set out. It feels spacious with several nice areas to sit, eat, practice yoga, watch birds or do whatever you like. The breakfasts are splendid and give one a chance to eat proper Keralan home cooked food.... My girlfriend and I had just spent two weeks of volunteer work in the outskirts of Chennai before heading to Varkala. We thought that we would really appreciate some R&R after staying in Chennai. Kaiya House was the PERFECT retreat! Our friend Debra, who we both had worked with in Seattle 30 years ago, is the owner of Kaiya House.... More

We stayed at Kaiya House for two nights in mid April, just a week before everything closes down in Varkala at the end of the season. Debra is a gracious and tremendously considerate host. We felt welcomed and taken care of the moment we arrived. We also appreciated the considerate emails and reservation process leading up to our stay. The... More

Debra has a unique personal touch... felt from the moment of arrival, and visible throughout Kaiya House. Boutique Homestay is a very appropriate description. After sitting down for a welcoming briefing and the ordinary Indian lenghty check-in formalities, Debra did something that no other host has ever done... she took us on a walking tour of the surrounding area, including... A wonderful place to stay! Debra is an incredible host - not only does she show real attention to detail and ensure your stay meets every possible expectation, she is just so warm and welcoming you'll be feeling at home before you know it! She arranged everything we needed - from personal yoga tuition on the gorgeous roof terrace, to... More

Yes the dancing on the roof was fabulously fun and the storm was wild! I can't believe the rain came all the way into the center of the rooftop! It was great meeting all of you and I too hope you return! Thanks you for taking the time to write such a lovely review! More

We intended to stay one night at the delightful Kaiya House and ended up staying four. The en suite rooms were spotless and the beds were very comfortable. In addition, complimentary refreshments were available all day. The house is a beautifully decorated space with an airy, relaxing rooftop where we ate breakfast, watched birds during the late afternoons and whiled... More

This is an excellent place to stay run by Debra, a very caring and helpful host. We liked the location as Kaiya House in not on the cliff but much more part of real Indian Varkala rather than being in the more tourist orientated area. The hotel is near the 2000 year old temple and bustling Temple Junction. If you... More

It was great to have you stay for a good amount of time. I'm pleased you liked the location and took full advantage of local things to do. I also loved that you spent quite a lot of time staying on the rooftop to just relax and read. That was exactly what I had in mind when I added it... More

Debra is the hostess with the mostest! She does everytrhing to ensure that your stay in her lovely house is a memorable one! From taking you on a familiarisation walk, to a 7 kilometre coastal footpath trail, to arranging the shopping for the wine, even through to money lending, nothing is too much trouble for her and her lovely staff.... Thanks so much for your lovely review! I miss seeing you two out for the day on the scooter! You really got around and likely discovered places I don't even know about. I'm also glad you enjoyed the walk. It's one of my favorite things to do here when I have the time and I enjoy sharing it. I hope... More

As has been said many times on this site, Debra's Kaiya House is a fantastic place to stay and at such a modest price too. Rooms maybe simple but they are very comfortable, spotless and beautifully decorated and the roof area is a great spot for relaxing. The staff are friendly and willing to do anything for you, particularly Debra... More
