My wife and I are field biologists from the U.S. (Arizona). Tinalandia was the first destination of our second trip to Ecuador, and it was a great way to start out our second month of naturalist adventures in the country. In addition to being avid birders and butterfly enthusuasts, we are both general naturalists interested in everything from ornithology to... More

Went for a day trip, the only person we saw asked a ridiculous amount of money to visited a clearly empty and lonely reserve, I called later to the office and the manager nicely gave me the right price, half of what she asked me for. Typical of the kind of tourism on this country, they seem to waste any... More

If you are looking for a boutique hotel or a 5 start cabana, this is not for you. Nor is it a place for you if you want dining and sleeping quarters nearby. If you are looking for endemics and a great range of Choco regional flora and fauna (like the Choco Trogon) this is really the place to stay.... More

We were taken to our isolated room ( which was really a cabin/hacienda) up a steep, beautiful and dangerous road. The room was a ridiculous red colour and smelled musty. Opaque brown water ran from the faucets in the bathroom. We drove back to the main hacienda for dinner and endured a meal which was plagued with thousands of moths.... More

We arrived very tired, in the late afternoon looking for a treat in the rain forest. We were met with the opposite, the rooms were rundown, the beds were uncomfortable. The meals were basic and the insects flying into our food were very off putting!!! We were expecting more for our money!! $155.00 US/night The location of the old Hacienda... More

This lodge may not be 5 star but what it lacks in Western comforts, it more than makes up for in charm, charachter and a helpfull attitude. The food is wonderful and the staff cannot do enough to make sure that your personal preferrences are met. The location allows a personal window into the lives of many bird species. In-your-face... Tinalandia is a nice place to watch insects and birds and to experience the cloud forest. As a hotel or hosteria it's a complete failure. The staff is not qualified, the owners obvious are overchallenged with running a guesthouse. Cabins (rooms) are very basic, same with the food. The rates are just exorbitant!

I came to Tinalandia from advise of an old friend who had been there back in the 1980s. I was not disappointed. My specific interests are butterfly and moth macro photography and the range of species that can be found there is staggering. The service and food are excellent and the accommodations are basic but comfortable.

Here is just a note to let everyone know what a wonderful experience I had at Tinalandia. I visited there in late May 2009 to pursue my hobby, nature photography. Tinalandia has a wonderful variety of habitats including primary and secondary growth rainforest, a stream and a pond for aquatic animals, a large expansive meadow area, and many micro habitats... This has been the most difficult review to write. We had the best experience at Tinalandia but the accommodation and facilities are basic, particularly given the costs we were charged. The service was amazing and the food was tailored to our requirements. Although we had some initial reservations about the facilities, we loved our experiences. We felt that we had... More
