The annoying things about this place would take too long and be too tiresome to relate. It strikes me that the owners have filled the place with ideas and stuff and assumed that's all you have to do to run a hotel and charge Western rates. The staff were utterly, relentlessly, repeatedly inept. One plus is the location with your... More

The free shuttle from Red Capital Residence in Beijing brought us to the Shambhala in the early afternoon. After settling in our enchanting private stone-walled pavilion newly refurbished and accented with Tibetan crafts, we took our pre-ordered box lunch on a easy to moderate hike along an unreconstructed section of the Great Wall just across the street from the Shambhala... View is fantastic with the Great Wall so very close by. And that is all. Food is random--both in quality and quatity. Beer warm even though it had been opened a week(think they closed for winter). Very disappointed. Totally not worth the money at all.

Stayed one night with my family. The rooms we were shown to were not ready for guests - wooden doors and frames had just been re-varnished so the rooms smelled of chemicals and the varnish was sticky and came off on our clothes. One of the toilets wouldn't flush, the outside sitting areas were thick with dust and dirt and... More

I was disappointed. This place is very inauthentic and completely geared to Western tourists with muddled and romanticized ideas of Asia. It seems to be a hodgepodge of tchotchkes the owners picked up, without any meaningful cultural touchstones. I enjoyed the drive up from Beijing, hiking up to the Great Wall guard tower and, especially, strolling around the nearby village.... More

When we arrived Lawrence and his little brother (the owner's children) came out and greeted us. They were very friendly and our five kids had a ball playing with them and the dogs all afternoon. We climbed the real Great Wall and saw the magnificent view of the Chinese mountain scenery from the top. It was certainly a view we... More

The stay at Shambhala was one of the highlights in Beijing. We were 3 generations (ages from 74 to 8) travelling together and Shambhala had something for everyone. The Tibetan staff was always very friendly and helpful, the surroundings very peaceful and the closeness to the great wall was perfect. When our youngest daughter lost her most precious little toy... I've stayed twice in this place - Oct 2010 and Aug 2011. It offers rustic-comfort - not the polished luxury in the likes of Aman properties. Both management and staff were excellent. Service was friendly, warm and personal. Try the massage and yoga.

We thoroughly enjoyed the Red Capital Ranch and would definitely go back. The staff was excellent (and we found their english to be great), the setting is peaceful and the proximity to the great wall is unbeatable. we also took a tour to the restored section of the great wall which the staff at the red capital ranch arranged for... The Red Capital Ranch looks gorgeous in the photographs of its rustic setting, its beautiful archtecture and its interiors. However, the place has not aged well. We had a previous stay here a few years ago but now the place feels run down. The Red Capital Ranch has not been maintained and repaired over the years. It's also gotten very... More
