After viewing many run-down hotel rooms situated in the backpackers region, we chose to stay at Thanh long tan hotel (a street away from the main backpacking area). This hotel is at the District 1 area and it is conveniently walking distance from everything. Vendors set up the night time shopping right across the street from this hotel.
