I paid 37 dinar (about 24 USD) for a single with breakfast - if you want a clean, simple, place in tunis (with pretty good wifi for free in the lobby), in a fantastic location right by the souq, you can't beat the Grand Hotel de France. You will likely need to call to make a reservation, and I don't... More

I stayed at the Grand Hotel de France for a few weeks while I worked in Tunis. Great hotel with character. I think you cannot find a hotel anywhere in Tunis that is such a good value. I stayed in a single room without a toilet/shower that overlooked the hotel courtyard for 25 dinars per night. Breakfast is included in... More

A little difficult to find when the taxi driver lets you off several blocks away in the middle of Avenue Habib Bourguiba. But with the help of friendly locals and an excellent Lonely Planet map, I found it OK on foot. (Not happy with the taxi driver, though, whose meter registered 37 dinar for what I found out later was... More

Excellent value for money, and a good location - but also plenty of atmosphere and charm. The streets immediately around the hotel might be a bit scruffy and grubby, but you are literally a minute away from Ave Bourguiba, the main entrance to the Medina and the main central food market. It's difficult to think how it could be better... More

Courtyard & friendly staff give bonus points. You can walk to Medina, train station, plenty of shops around close to eateries. When i visited Tunis, there were few riots/curfew et al. I felt very safe & comfortable in staying there. Breakfast could have been better. More

As we were female travellers (my daughter and I) we were concerned about our reception as not all Tunis hotels welcome unaccompanied females but we shouldn't have worried as the welcome was warm and the staff were a delight. It's a simple hotel but has lots of atmosphere with authentic features and is very well kept. The room was plain... More

We spent a night here at the end of our trip to Tunisia. It's located right next to the medina and right next to the market. Easy to find and in walking distance to the train station. The hotel was pretty clean (undergoing renovations currently, Aug 2011) and the price was very reasonable (~€30/night for 2). No WiFi, but there's... More

We loved the Grand Hotel de France - it's beautiful and old-fashioned in a good way. The rooms were spartan (definitely ask for one with a view of the courtyard though) but high-ceilinged and airy, and bathrooms basic. But the courtyard was a joy, a cool leafy oasis - and the wonderful moustachioed man who makes and serves the breakfast... More

I fell in love with this hotel for its beauty and elegance. The rooms are clean and bright but still retain a lot of charm and the whole place feels like it hasn't changed since the 1920's but in a good way. Very helpful reception staff and it is located conveniently just around the corner from the old medina. More
