I have stayed twice at the Painted Fish and seen it evolve over the years. My favourite is the Studio because it is so funky with the spiral staircase and the beautiful views over the ponds. This is an artists sanctuary and an ecologically sustainable property. It is popular so you must book in advance or be very lucky. There... More

On arrival at the Painted Fish studio my two girlfriends (who are used to pristine overseas accomodation) were unsettled at the different appeal this place offers. By the end of our stay we all left feeling we learnt something. This space is ideal for those questioning the existing human conditioning and the impact its having on the earth and our... More

We were lucky enough to snag three nights in the Cottage at the Painted Fish with our son and his girlfriend at the end of our two week stay in WA. This place is pretty popular, so if you are considering a stay, plan well ahead. All four of us really loved everything about our time here. It certainly jogged... More

This is a place you either love or hate.. If you want super modern, lots of luxury...don't go here. If you are into green slightly hippyish living...book yourself in! I was in Fremantle for a conference and balked at the cost of the official accommodation. A colleague put me onto The Painted Fish and when I next end up in... More

We stayed in the carriage - a converted train carriage with outdoor bathroom. What a great experience! It was cosy, cool (on 2 very hot nights) comfortable and the outdoor shower was great fun, although I'm sure not for everyone. The carriage was very private and we felt like we were all alone! We didn't see our hosts, but their... More

The Painted Fish is at the end of Hulbert St, South Fremantle - a short walk from stop 10 on the Blue Cat (free) bus route. Hulbert Street is a quirky throwback to the hippy sixties - with much of the furniture in the 3 bedroom Cottage being that age or older and barely functional. Cleanliness is not a priority... More

Sustainability good. Inconsideration, uncaring and taking liberties crap. Booked studio got he cottage. Stove & kitchen smelt like gas. Needs replacement. Money spinner would allow this. Bad art made of junk (diver suit etc). Lots of self promotion mags. Cleaning (only sweeping) an issue. Eco friendly ways to clean so why not? Hemp linen very nice. Encouraging people to leave... The Painted Fish was delightful. I stayed in the Carriage House, which was very comfortable. I was a bit apprehensive about the outdoor shower at first, especially since it was winter, but quickly grew to appreciate its quirkiness. The walk into Freo was pleasant. I would stay again without second thoughts.

Stayed in the studio, moved to the carriage. Walked in stressed, left relaxed. Loved how relaxed the whole place was, the outdoor shower was a refreshing change. Its not the Hilton and I didn't want it to be. I learnt from the lifestyle, I enjoyed the relaxed approach and I WILL do it again. Made me feel human and I... More

Really regretted staying at Painted Fish. Nearly ruined my holidays! I should have read the postings here instead of trusting the blogs on its own website. On hindsight, common sense would have tell me that only good things are being presented on it's own website. Full of cobwebs and the place looks so run down that it sends shivers down... More
