We got in late from a few day hike, and the place was bustling since it was a Saturday night. One of the very busy servers was kind enough to make sure we got dinner and a room key. It's a very historic building with high ceilings and basic rooms. The rooms are upstairs from the bar/pub, which has delicious... More

Situated in Oamaru's flourishing 'Historic Precinct', the recently renovated Criterion oozes old world charm. I haven't experienced the .accommodation, but am told by friends that it is immaculate and very reasonably priced.. However, as a member of an all-male book group which meets there once a month, I can testify to the quality of the meals.----MAN'S STUFF, hearty, generous, tasty... More

Stayed here in April 2013 on a Friday night. Hotel is nicely renovated with good atmosphere BUT it is a venue for live (and loud) music until after midnight. Our room actually vibrated the noise was so loud. Sleep was impossible. Even cleaning up staff played music and talked loudly. There are no rooms to escape this noise. My advice... More

We only used the Criterion to eat in having been disappointed when our first choice restaurant was fully booked. However it proved a very sound choice with a good value menu in an interesting setting. I can recommend the Lamb Shank. Service was pleasant and efficient

This lovely old building set right in the heart of histroic Oamaru has been recently refurbished and we loved its charm and character. Rooms and breakfast arrangements are quirky and it wasn't at all expensive given its location and unique character. Unusually for New Zealand it has quite an English pub feel to the bar and you can eat informally... More

The Criterion Hotel situated in the old heritage section of Oamaru is the perfect location for travellers wishing to take a walk back in time and to have the opportunity to be treated with overwhelming positive hospitality. The ladies who work in the hotel behind the bar and in the kitchen are amazing. They have welcoming friendly faces and nothing... More

Oamaru is one of the most bizzare places we have stayed in NZ. To appreciate it you have to stay in the old town and the Criterion Hotel was just perfect for the atmosphere. It has been loving restored with vintage fittings and is very comfortable. The new management has ensured a comfortable night with brand new beds and immaculate... More

We really enjoyed our stay here - the hospitality at the bar couldn't be beat, and it really has that classic pub/hotel feel. It has recently reopened, and it is clear that the owners are really trying hard to present a classy lodging option in the old Victorian sector of Oamaru. Lots of highlights to our stay - not just... I enjoyed a pint at the Criterion this weekend while showing a friend around. This hotel has reached the pinnacle of New Zealand hospitality. Pete is outstanding behind the bar, and deserves to be proud of his and Amanda's establishment. The welcoming atmosphere, local knowledge, and humour combine to settle travellers and visitors to Oamaru in the utmost comfort. You... More
