The Lyell Creek Lodge in Kaikoura is my all-time favourite hostel in all of New Zealand. Even though it's a bit of a walk from the town of Kaikoura itself (15 mins), but for me, it's the best one I've stayed in and I've stayed there 3 times now. The guy that runs the hostel, Aaron, has always been very... More

Good place to stay - the owner and the host were both welcoming. The kitchen could be better equipped, but they do have a suggestion box, so are open to improving. A fair walk out of town, but right next to a great fish and chip shop which the host recommended.

Don't be seduced by the website video of ducks swimming in a bubbling brook. The idyllic-looking grassed area out back is uninviting and the creek disappointing. The location is not ideal. It's a fair walk into town and this hostel is right on the road. Traffic noise easily penetrates the thin walls. In fact the thin walls are a real... More

We have booked accommodation about 8 weeks prior to our scheduled arrival. We were promised a double room and a twin room, both with ensuite. Upon arrival, we realized that the double room was not with an ensuite. Regrettably, with 2 elderly women, we could not stay in a room without an ensuite. We have paid 60% cancellation fee for... Meet up with some new friends travelling north from Christchurch, we stopped off in beautiful Kaikoura to swim with the dolphins and see their famous whales. We all stayed at Lyell Creek Lodge and loved it there. It is a home away from home. Looks like its just been done up with new carpets, beds and facilities etc. The Hostess... More

We stayed in this Lodge one night in December on a trip around the South Island. The staff were friendly and helpful, and as inexpensive and basic accommodation, it was fine for one night. The room I was in was reasonably clean, although I felt that the bunk could have had a wipe down. The toilet was not conveniently located,... More

We can not work out the reason for this review, we pride our selves on being a cozy clean Lodge and have NEVER had a problem with bed bugs. Since this review we have fully renovated the inside of our lodge including new carpet, curtains, beds, kitchens and of course paint. We welcome a full inspection to every guest before... More

Lyell Creek Lodge is a short drive from town and the whale watching tour. We only stayed one night so spent limited time at the hostel but I found it to be clean and comfortable. We were offered a cheaper rate due to some renovations being done which meant we did not get ensuite rooms as requested. This was no... More
