This place backed onto the beach which was cool. We stayed in a self-contained lodge which was basic but had all the facilities we needed. We had our own kitchenette, 4 twin beds in one room and a good shower. The heating was alright as well. Very clean and spacious. The staff were also very helpful and friendly. More

My boyfriend and I stayed in a self-contained unit at the back of the reception which was very private and had full kitchen facilities. The kitchen was so well equipped we decided not to eat out even on our only night in Kaikoura. The room was large with one double bed and one single bed, dining table with 4 chairs... More

All the rooms in the main block were booked when we went so we stayed 4 nights in the family cottage. It's basic, but has everything you need. It did get really cold at night, but it was Autumn, so not surprising. After cooking and having the little heater in the bedroom on it was cosy in the bedroom. The... More

We stayed in the self contained studio unit so can't comment on the backpackers section. It had everything we needed, the only two negative comments we would make is that there was not a decent frying pan in the unit, only 2 tiny ones which made it difficult to cook the fish we had bought, and the pillows were pretty... We stayed in the ensuite double, which was big and clean with a very comfy bed. The hostel is two minutes walk from the whale watching and 10mins from town centre. Transport is useful to get to dolphin encounter and the walk along the cliffs. More

We had booked in to stay one night at Sunrise Lodge in Kaikoura but decided to stay on for another and were lucky and squeezed in. The first night we stayed in a double studio apartment which was bright, cheerful and well equipped. It had been designed with disabled facilities and had an area outside where you could sit and... We had a really lovely time at Sunrise lodge. Located just across the railway tracks from the Whale Watch center it was very conveniently located. Marc and Osi are really friendly and welcoming people and booked our fishing trip for us and even dropped us off at south bay. The free bikes we hired from them were great... I wish... More

A very last-minute trip this month saw myself and our 8 year old son head North out of Christchurch on the wonderfully-wobbly Tranzscenic train beyond the ponderously Eeenglish confines of 'The Garden City' properly for the first time. In the process of emigrating to NZ our family of 3 boys under 10 and we parents have been living out of... More
