i stayed out in one of the "modern studios " out the back of the hotel & it was in pretty sad shape- severe water damage to the vanity in the bathroom looked like a rat was eating it like weetbix - its was the most expensive place i stayed at in 10 other centres & needs some of that... More

This was our second short stay on the Island, and the only time we've gone out for dinner. There are not many options and they tend to be expensive, except for South Sea Hotel. Mostly we order the cheaper options, and not much in the way of drinks (1 coke 1 coffee 1 beer), but we did have all three... More

The South Sea Hotel is the most centrally located hotel on the Island, although nothing is far from the harbour. The hotel is about 1 minute walk from getting off the ferry, which is handy when it is raining. However, other motels on the Island will pick you up directly from the ferry or plane if you request it. We... More

We stayed here after walking across the Island. It was fine with shared facilities and a compact room. The tea and coffee making facilities were a bonus. We ate dinner here too which again was fine. Good basic and tasty grub. The lasagne was very good and plentiful rather than aestheticly presented. The fish pie was fine with plenty of... More

Right in the middle of town. Earplugs supplied. We were in room 9, above the kitchen and dining room. The swinging doors to the kitchen made a constant thumping noise from before dawn until well after dinner service closed. The walls are quite thin, so a talkative neighbour will disturb a light sleeper. The water-filled radiator makes a constant noisy... More

My wife and I spent nearly 7 weeks touring NZ in October and November 2012 and our 2 night stay on Stewart Island at the South Sea Hotel was an undoubted highlight. We chose the hotel because of the fantastic position it is in and because it looked to have character. It is an older building and yes we did... More

I was booked in and told the room was upstairs somewhere. It turned out to be at the back of the hotel. I was in a single room (number 12). It was pretty basic with a single bed, a slightly cracked washbasin and a wardrobe that looked a bit tatty inside. There was no bedside cabinet or bedside lamp. It... More

We stayed at the hotel for 4 lovely nights. Although there were earplugs supplied we didn't need to use them, just enjoyed the music and sound of people enjoying themselves. Great to see the locals enjoying their pub! The room was in the middle upstairs so no view and only a small window. It was traditional (twin beds, basin and... More

We had a nice double room (number 6), it was right above the jukebox downstairs and boy that playlist was pure 70s gold. They provide earplugs but it went off about 11pm anyway. A nice room, with spotless shared showers and toilets, and tea and coffee facilities in the hallway. Had a decent meal at the restaraunt downstairs, all in... More

Stayed at the hotel before and after doing the Rakiura Track - it was simply wonderful. Yes, shared bathrooms - but they were spotless. Great lounge and balcony upstairs. Laundry and boot cleaning facilities. The staff were friendly and helpful. Don't miss the Trivia Night in the bar on Sunday evening - best fun ever!
