It felt like I was staying with my aunt or something. Our double was perfect, it even had a TV which was a first for us in a hostel. The bed was unbelievable - the bedding was nicer than what I have at home! The shared bathrooms right outside and always cleaned to perfection. The whole place is really small,... More

I travel a lot for my job, and have stayed in accomodation all over NZ and Australia, all in varying price ranges. The Haka Lodges are now my preferred locations to stay in Christchurch and Queenstown. It's rare to find a private room for only $75 in either of these cities, with any, let alone all of the following: a)... More

While this wasn't a bad spot, there wasn't anything outstanding about it either. The room (we had a double) was adequate, though quite small; the bathrooms were very clean and just across the hall; but the kitchen was tiny, and there was only one picnic-table sized dining table. While it wasn't too much of a problem, it did mean that... More

Thanks for your review. We are a friendly backpackers that accommodates a small amount of guests and are glad you found our bathrooms clean and handy. We have 2 kitchens at our property and because we accommodate just 20 people, normally works really well but appreciate there can be delays if guests do we want to cook at the same... More

this is a place for very low budget, the staff was friendly, but the rest is really meant for cheap stay, our room was small and very smelly! the bathroom is to share with all the guests! it gets very noisy at night making sleeping very difficult! the kitchen is nice, but to share.internet is free but limited at 1... I really liked the hostel – stayed there at easter and got free cupcakes, sweets and more. The dorm is great, it's clean, the only drawback is the location … it's too far to walk to the city centre. But if you like that, it's just perfect.

Thanks for your review and we are glad you enjoyed the Easter Treats. We have a public bus at the front of our property and travels to the city every 30 minutes however the walk into the city is very interesting if you have the time to walk. All the best for your time in NZ. The Haka Lodge Team More

It's a nice place which was well decorated. It gave a very warm feeling and instantly you feel comfortable inside the hostel. The living room is cosy and the kitchen was sufficient. However, the narrow stairways made it a little inconvenient when shifting luggages. Also, the toilet doors are not exactly very user friendly. Without a "Vacant" or "in-use" sign,... More

Thanks for your review, we are glad you felt comfy from the moment you entered our property! We have new vacant/in use door locks which means no more embarrassing situations when people haven’t locked the door! (We did have door locks on the doors prior to the new door locks). We are a little hard to locate being on the... More

The way they converted this town house into a cute youth hostel is very well done. It's very comfortable and the private room we stayed in was great. But, as other reviewers have already mentioned, the banging of the bathroom doors is very annoying, especially at night. What is really disappoiniting about this hostel, though, is the poor service. Thanks for your feedback; we really appreciate your comments. We are sorry for the noise from the doors, but as the automatic door closers are a fire regulation, we are required to have them for the safety of those staying with us. You will be pleased to read we have had our builder in to soften the automatic door closers... More

We stayed in the 2 BR family apartment - big kitchen, large screen TV, large bath, nice little deck, greenery all around, very conveniently located (we had a rental car). They even did our laundry for $7 a load!

I stayed in the Haka Lodge the day before and after my 9-day South Island tour. It was well worth the NZ$29 I paid and I would definitely stay there again. I felt like I was a guest in someone's vacation home rather than a customer in a commercial establishment. The rooms and washrooms were clean, modern, and well-maintained. The... More

This is a spotless lodge...very very clean... with extremely nice and helpful staff. I just didn't realize how far out it is from central Christchurch...a $30 cab ride. But there is a bus available if you have time...
