We stayed just one night but I wish we had stayed longer. A very clean backpackers with options of cabins and dorms. It is set in a lush garden so you really feel away from everything yet it is walking distance to all of Piahia. The bathrooms are spotless and great showers! A very large communal kitchen and lounge area.... More

Really enjoyed our stay here. Very relaxing place. Stayed in a twin cabin amongst banana palms. Very clean room, bedding was clean and kept us warm. Staff were really friendly and helpful, especially the owner Rose. Bathrooms were kept clean. Good kitchen facilities. A free breakfast was provided (as long as everyone kept the kitchen clean) which was appreciated. Good... More

We spent 2 nights in a private double. The hostel itself is very low-key, well-run, and friendly. All the rooms have sliding glass doors onto sort-of decks, and the bathrooms and kitchen are across the courtyard. Pluses: Super friendly and helpful owner Rose Very clean Fairly quiet- there is a VERY enforced 11pm no-noise rule Free DVDs to borrow (though... More

This hostel has a very friendly atmosphere. The location is not the best (far from the center of Paihia; however ii is a quite small town), but this means you will have a very relaxing experience. At the end of the day it will be really nice to rest on the patio. Everthing seems to be very clean. The bathrooms... More

I stumbled upon the Pickled Parrot from an online review. Rose, the owner, makes you feel extremely welcome and you get the feeling you are being well looked after. She will spend time trying to save you money in Paihia or with rent in her own rooms. There is free wireless internet with one computer free to use also with... More

This place is fantastic, just what you want from a hostel, good hosts, good beds and good company! I came for a few days and left two weeks later..and I WILL be returning every time I come back to NZ! Rose is a brilliant host, friendly and funny, with good local knowledge and always making us smile! One of the... More

I just loved this hostel. I booked one of the cabins (up a flight of stairs and away from the main communal area) and was very happy. It was quiet and peaceful, and had a jungle feeling to it. A very simple continental breakfast is included and it's not put out unless the kitchen is clean, so it was always... More

We stayed at Pickled Parrot for 2 nights and it was the best backpacker we've ever been! The place was really worth the price. The service was nice, everybody was friendly. All common rooms were surprisingly clean, although we found some ants on the wall and beds. Overall, we are very satisfied with Pickled Parrot and will definitely recommend it... More

We stayed here for a night at the start of a full on holiday. We arrived about 3 hours later than planned late at night due to a flight delay but the owner had given us our room number and location of key in advance if she wasn't around - which she was. Room was basic but clean and comfy... More

We stayed at the Parrot for four nights, and were a little dubious on arrival, as our double room was quite small and close to the common areas. However the Parrot is a quiet hostel - no noise after 11 pm - and it was very peaceful at night. No ensuite unfortunately, but plenty of shower and toilet facilities that... More
