Decided I needed to get out of Wellington for the long weekend. Chose Mairenui Rural Retreat at Mangaweka as Mangaweka recommended by workmate and I had never been to Mangaweka before. Great weekend. Obliging and friendly hosts, Sue and David. If it's rustic you like than the Retreat fits the bill. Sure is a "hobbit-like" house so quirky. Very private,... More

This place is really terrific. The whole area is stunningly beautiful. The villa where we stayed is pure charm and Sue and David are great hosts. More

We had no idea what we would find outside of Mangaweka at David and Sue Sweet's Mairenui Rural retreat as it was recommended by a fishing guide we hired, Jim Rainey. We were so pleasantly surprised. This feels like the real New Zealand. David showed us around the farm that has been in his family for generations and Sue made... More

Mairenui is as authentic a farm/rural stay as you will get in NZ. The feel is absolutely genuine and is set in one of the North Island's most scenic areas with beautiful rolling hill farmland, a beautiful canyoned river and native bush walks. The accommodation is wonderfully old fashioned and gives you the feel of an late 1800s colonial farm... More

this place is advertised as a "farm stay" however, the reality is it more like a great boutique hotel wonderful clean room and even better meals! Wines and bar akin to an international hotel friendly and entertaining hosts. (without being overbearing or intruding) many thanks David and Sue for a great stay! highly recommended More

One of the best travel experiences I have ever had, I highly recommend that your visit to New Zealand include at least a couple of night stay with Sue and Dave, our wonderful hosts at Mairenui Rural Retreat. They made us feel as though we were part of their family with wonderful conversation over gourmet meals, cooked by Sue. The... More

Still a little gem tucked away in the hills east of Mangaweka, North Island, New Zealand, which rewards you for your hunting with its tranquillity. Delights include: Kereru, (NZ. Native Pigeon), swooping above us high, then deliberately stalling, followed by a downward glide, all seemingly for our pleasure. Weather was great on the first evening to set up our humble... More

The hosts very very warm and courteous. It was fun to have a meal with them and exchange ideas, views and culture of our two countries. The location and setting was terrific. It could not have been better. Our best stay ever. I recommend at least two nights and a farm tour. More

First up – we can only highly recommend this wonderful farm and its owners to you. Mairenui epitomises a kiwi back to nature olde world country experience. Time has stood still, with rutted access drive, original farmhouse villa, the old stable, and back to basics living. Every aspect of our accommodation was imbued with the character of settler life. But... More
