I chose the Alto on previous reviewers' advice for my 3 night solo break from a stressful job and my testosterone-filled home. Position is great for easy arrival by Skybus from the airport to Southern Cross Station, then a one block walk across Spencer St up Bourke St. It is however quite a distance from the CBD which is okay... Thank you for your comments. It seems we were good in some areas and not others. If our estimate is correct the bleach smell was the carpet stain remover used to treat a mark. We should not have released the room for occupancy until the odour had dissipated. We should have offered an ionizing system that charges particles and neutralises... More

We had been travelling for three weeks overseas and had requested an early check in. The hotel was full but they proprietized the make up of our room so that we got access as soon as possible. Whilst waiting they provided coffee and helped us plan our visit ie what tram to catch, where to catch it, how the ticketing... More

Stayed here for 8 nights and loved it! Great location if you're attending the Exhibition and Convention Centre or Casino - 15 minute walk or 5 on the tram which stops 30 metres from the Hotel door. Etihad Stadium is within walking distance too. Jump on the tram at the front of the hotel and 5 minutes down the road... More

This is an example of an hotel with perfect service, everyone was incredibly friendly and helpful. Although the room looked a bit small when we first walked in, it had everything you need, the bathroom was spacious and spotless clean. It's only a short walk to the CBD, Hardware Lane is around the corner with many options for delicious food... More

My wife and I stayed 4 nights at Alto in early March. The location is not impressive being a long walk into the center and opposite the Melbourne Hotel which can be noisy at night (although the soundproofing is effective). The hotel felt a bit claustrophobic because of our room's view of a brick wall, and the tiny reception area.... More

Spent two nights at the Alto hotel in April 2012. As others have noted it is a number of blocks away from the main shopping/tourist area but in a great location for getting the bus to and from the airport. Wasn't a problem to walk to the tourist sites or get the tram (better than dragging our bags a long... More

We were en route to Melbourne from Eden in NSW and quickly found this hotel online. To our surprise, we found a room for only $138 (online rate) available for that night. The hotel is only one block from the main transportation hub of Southern Cross Station (I think it was called), and three blocks from the river, including the... More

I only stayed for work, but the location is excellent - right near Southern Cross station and a host of shops, supermarket, food hall and city sights right on its doorstep. It's easy to get the Skybus from the airport to Southern Cross station, and then a two-minute walk to the hotel. Room service dinner was excellent (my blue steak... More

Great little hotel - friendly staff, clean and convenient. Room was a little small but you get that in old buildings. Had all the facilities, tram stop right out the front which means you can go anywhere and they run on green energy. Will stay again. More
