Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I checked in hostel and put my stuff inside the room and went out. The receptionist told me where is my room and that is it. When I came back to the hostel around 2 am. The main door was closed. There was written on the door in case the reception is closed call following number... Number did not work. I was knocking at the door and was standing there 15 min. While was raining outside. I didnt get in to hostel. Following day I came back and complain. Receptionist told me I could use other door which he didn't mention before and it wasn't written on the main door either. I asked for refund. Unfortunately I was refused. Also I asked to speak to manager and the receptionist told me that he is the main manager which was clearly lie! Than I spoke to maintenance guy and he asked for my details and he said he gonna postpone it to manager. I was waiting couple of days and no call no reply. Other day I came back to hostel in the afternoon. The reception was closed and there was bell to call personal. Again none come!

I have nothing positive to say about this hostel. It was run down and dirty throughout. The power point in my room was hanging out of the wall (unsafe), the combined toilets/showers had ineffective locks on the doors, my shower head 'flopped around" in the wall, the bed was the most saggy, uncomfortable bed I have slept on, there was no air conditioning, and lockers were too small to be useful. I would change my travel plans rather than stay there again.

This place is an absolute disgrace and shouldn’t be operating. Full of disgusting old men, some are alcoholics, druggies and mentally unstable. They sit outside the ‘hostel’ all day and all night (kept us awake every single night). Our room was in the basement that had a small window which was level with the street outside. Kitchen is disgusting and bathrooms are atrocious. We were woken up one morning by 2 of the mentally unstable residents having a physical fight outside our room. Disgusting place.

This is the worst hostel ever! I’ve never seen anything so filthy in my life! The bathroom is vile and has that creepy vibe, I was too scared to shower in that place. It gets even juicer... I seen an homeless guy outside the bathroom. Safe to say Melbourne was eventful 😂😂

Attempted to stay here for a nap before a flight (6pm-2am) and stupidly didn’t look at any reviews beforehand. Checked in and went to my room which had a notice on the door saying closed for cleaning, went back to reception, the man said that sign was old, took it down and showed me into the room. The entire hostel was absolutely filthy and revolting. It smelt, the carpet looked mouldy and everything was just dirty. Put my bag in the room and went out for a couple of hours as I felt very uncomfortable and a bit unsafe in the hostel (solo 26 y/o female traveller) which seemed to mostly be full of people who looked like they were homeless or junkies. Came back and laid on my bed for a nap, after an hour awoke to see a bed bug run across the bed, leapt up and the bed was COVERED in bugs. Grabbed my bags, went to reception for a refund so I could get the hell out of there, the man behind reception had the cheek to ask if I’d been bitten when I told him about the bed bugs and when I said I didn’t know he said it didn’t look like I had been. Got my money back and ran. It later transpired all my bags were full of bed bugs and I got bitten to s**t. Lesson learned, read reviews before booking accommodation.

This is appalling - the entire building smells of damp and dirt. My bed was inordinately uncomfortable with springs protruding into me; the bathrooms were disgraceful- in one the shower did not function and the cistern leaked when flushed; in the other the taps leaked and fell apart allowing water to spray everywhere.

I seriously assume that any homeless shelter has better circumsises. Literally everything is discusting: shower(s), living areas, kitchen and my bed smelled like 20 year old sweat and pee. Even after drinking a bottle of wine by myself wouldn't put me to sleep. How could the Australian government has not closed this "facility". * Just book yourself something better for a couple of bucks. They'll be the best spend bucks in your life. Trust me.

First impression upon arriving at the front door was the coldest and rudest welcome by the male reception. Without any word or gestures, he sat there with no profressionalism at all. No welcome No nothing!!! Not even a "How may I help you please??" As soon as I witnessed this, I walked straight back out the front door. How can an organization like this suppose to run with these type of staff running the desk?? Just terrible, horrible customer service.

Pros: close location to Southern Cross Railway and the Skybus terminal, free wifi in rooms Cons: Dirty & grotty, rubbish everywhere, stained & ripped mattresses, 2 combined shower/toilet cubicles for the entire first floor, only stair access, no blankets or towels provided (have to pay extra), no air conditioning, no fly screens on windows, every common area is filthy, dark and dingy. I'm not one to write negative reviews, but I had to make an exception for this disgusting experience. Don't stay here unless you're desperate. There's a backpackers across the road that looked clean, organised, and way better quality with free breakfast, so if you want the convenience of the location, book across the road (Melbourne City Backpackers). I was devastated when I saw how nice the other backpackers looked. I definitely wish I'd read the reviews before booking at The Melbourne Connection.

Grim is all I need to say. Everything was dirty and/or broken. There were plenty of stains on the bed and sheets. Plenty of noise from the streets. I’ve attached a wonderful picture of my room with a view. If you’re on a budget and have had all your jabs then fill your boots with this place. If not, spend a little extra you WILL NOT regret it.
