My husband and I stayed at Desert Cave Hotel for 1 night on the way from Port Auguasta to Uluru in Dec 2011. The hotel was built in roughly 80's. The roon is of a reasonable size but the room charge is over its value. The room is dark and the air smells funny which we thought make sense, since... More

We were looking forward to our stay in Coober Pedy and had booked what was to be the "best" place in Coober Pedy. I didn't have high expectations (my preconceptions) and was surprised by this hotel. It really has the ambitions to be a 4star hotel. But there are a few shortcomings that keep me from agreeing. The staff is... More

As I note in another recent review we also stayed here for two nights as part of a Lake Eyre holiday package. I had previously stayed at the hotel in 1995 and it is exactly as I remembered it. It is, of course, very different being the "world's only underground international hotel" and being located in one of the more... More

Recently visited the Desert Cave for a planned 2 night's accommodation as part of a flying adventure to the region incorporating a flight over Lake Eyre but due to an unexpected problem with the aircraft we spent an additional 3 nights in a unique underground four star room. The room itself was great, supported by excellent quality and choice of... More

We stayed two nights at this hotel as part of a Lake Eyre travel package.I was happy with my accommodation. The staff are mostly sourced from overseas on special work visas so have no real local knowledge or experience, however, I found them all well mannered and helpful. The restaurant, Umbertos, is very good. The prices are higher than city... More

LOCATION: Centrally located on Cooper Pedy’s main road: Hutchison Street, opposite the overrated John’s Pizza Bar & Restaurant. Free car park for hotel guest and a five percent petrol discount at the nearby BP station. HOTEL: The underground rooms were very popular and were often fully booked. Friendly and fast check-in and check-out. The above ground room was of a... More

Had a great stay here the staff was very helpfull and friendly, though some could barley speak english, you would think that was a requirement in outback Australia! Rooms are great we had a double room underground and the kids loved it. We had dinner in the restaurant and found it a bit pricy an our meat was overcooked and... More

Firstly - we stayed at the Desert Cave as part of a large tour group, therefore our experience might not reflect that of individual travellers. However we won't be going back to retest. The Good - our 'underground' room was large. The king size bed was comfortable and the room was well equipped – even a torch. Nice touches were... More

We enjoyed the novelty of our underground room. It was not dusty, musty or claustrophobic at all. We slept well on the decent, king-sized bed. All staff were courteous and attentive. This hotel has a restaurant , cafe and shops. The oysters at the restaurant were fresh! (How do they do it?) The cafe served really hot, strong coffee. More
