We offer fully inclusive holidays at our small arts retreat guest house in a sleepy riverside town in rural NE Thailand. We provide a combination of painting /photography tuition and a unique access to Thai rural culture. As we are far from the tourist centres, it is very safe and the people are open and friendly. Professional tuition is provided by Australian artist Jeremy Holton and you will stay with him and his Thai wife, Waree, in a relaxed family atmosphere beside the Mekong River. Jeremy will help you to find your inner voice and let the painting take over so that you are painting intuitively and creating exceptional works that grow naturally from your interaction with paint and canvas. This process allows you to escape reality and encourages your imagination and natural ability to flourish. We have two large well equipped rooms that look out on the the Mekong River. They have private entrances, ensuite bathrooms with wonderful hot showers. Free WiFi, satellite TV, Chromecast, coffee or tea making, free drinking water, air conditioner, fan, refrigerator, universal power socket to charge your devices, fresh flowers, hair dryer, first aid kit, safe, fire extinguisher, loaner mobile phone. The guest lounge has large screen TV, Karaoke, DVD movies, Chromecast, movie server, Satellite TV, games, keyboard, a well stocked self service bar, fridge, free drinking water, coffee and tea making. Painting and most meals are on the terrace as the weather is perfect in the cool dry season. The dining tables are under a pergola with flowering climbers and a perfect view of the Mekong River, the fishing boats and Laos on the far bank with the mountains in the distance.

I stayed at Mekong Guesthouse with hosts Jeremy and his wife Waree from 28th December 2019 to 15th January 2020. Also had the nice company or Jit (Warees sister) and their delightful children, 3 boys, (all very good at badminton and computer games). Was a fantastic holiday and very memorable trip. Have loved visiting Thailand for a holiday since 1995. My primary reason for visiting Jeremy in Phon Phisai was wanting to learn to paint with acrylics and oils. This was all done in very comfortable accommodation overlooking the Mekong River. The room was spacious, spotlessly cleaned every day with nice shower facilities. Food was excellent, Warees cooking was faultless, always plenty to eat, always fresh and fragrant, sometimes cooked at home, other times brought home from one of the many restaurants in the village, other times we go out as a group or sometimes just a couple of us. Did go once to the (White House restaurant) alone during the evening and was lovely food, service was excellent, staff very polite and had a nice band playing Thai music… would definitely recommend a visit. The town is quite quiet but has restaurants and maybe one bar, a 7-11 and another convenient store opposite that kept my fridge well stocked lol! There’s a Lao market on Tuesdays and Saturdays that is very interesting and well worth a stroll and look around. The locals were very friendly, I loved a sit on the bank of the Mekong and watch the elder ladies attend to there vegetable plantations whilst others kept fit pacing up and down the promenade, often with a chat or acknowledgement. The sunsets were very memorable, hardly a cloud in the sky and not a breath of wind during my time, was absolute bliss. Jeremy and Waree, took me on various trips, to Warees home village, rubber plantation, Wats, Nong Khai, shops, restaurants, coffee shops, the beach on the Mekong etc. I’d like to think I wasn’t very demanding and was happy to just chill out and absorb what I could during the painting tuition. I was very satisfied with what I accomplished painting wise, it has put me on another path in life, so I thank Jeremy very much for his time and tuition. I’m still like a drink…so don’t expect anything spectacular lol! Was definitely one of my best holiday experiences, but completely different to many other touristy places in Thailand, its truly relaxing. Any questions please feel free to email me mattshaw1664@icloud.com Thanks Jeremy, Waree, and Jit. The memories and experience you provided is precious in these troubled times. Hope you and family are well, Kind regards Matt

We learned these techniques while staying at Mekong House with our hospitable host Jeremy and his family. We really enjoyed the visits to Nong Khai and Wat Phu Tok as well. Jeremy’s a bit of a geek too so we learned lots of tricky technical things on the side. Waree’s cooking is as good as you will get in any Thai restaurant.

I have just read colonsay traveller's review and I was most surprised at the negative report. I first stayed with Jeremy and Waree in 2013 and I enjoyed my holiday so much, that I have been back every year since and have now stayed with them five times. I am, already looking forward to my next visit, come Nov/Dec 2018 – and to be truthful, I would suffer withdrawal symptoms were I not to make the trip. Every artist or aspiring artist has different criteria. For me, I enjoy the laid-back relaxing environment, painting as much or as little as I choose. (I am on holiday after all); however, Jeremy is always available at my beck-and-call when I am in my more intense moods, for friendly and useful advice and instruction, which includes constructive criticism if required (how else can one learn?). Of course, Jeremy being a professional artist has his own styles and ideas and influences, but I relish this. After all, why should I travel such a long distance from, Scotland to paint in the same style as I do week in and week out at my Arty Class in Glasgow? The painting projects that Jeremy suggests you adopt are sometimes challenging and take you a wee bit out of your comfort zone, but I like to be challenged and stretched a bit. Having said that, if or when you wish to paint or draw in a style more familiar to you, this of course is ‘your choice’, and Jeremy remains at hand to give you advice as and when needed. It may be that he is not always looking over your shoulder, but a quick call to him whilst he may be in his own quartiers, will bring him speedily to attend to you. On my first couple of visits I was taken on a number of very interesting sight-seeing trips and still go on the occasional trip, this year witnessing the draining of a rice paddy to catching fish as the water receded. The market rolls in (or should I say, ‘sails in’) twice-weekly with Laotian traders crossing from across the river. Its worth a stroll through. The food is always fresh and delicious, with meals expertly prepared each evening by Waree and at lunchtime eating out at a traditional homely Thai restaurant or having fresh food brought in. I also have to remark on the full English Breakfast prepared especially for me each morning, to remind me a little bit of home. Jeremy’s family are delightful, and their 3 boys are super when they are around. Waree’s sister is a dedicated and thorough housekeeper ensuring that your room is always clean and tidy. As for price, I have to say that the value for money is exceptional. A beautiful en-suite room with huge window looking out the veranda and further across the Mekong River to Laos on the opposite river bank (the sunsets are amazing to behold), and with all meals and art tuition and art materials included. I went to an organised 1-week painting holiday in the Amalfi Coat in Italy a couple of years ago and the cost, including travel, accommodation and tuition was almost double my spend for my visits to Thailand, including flights etc. I cannot recognise the experience that colonsay traveller describes and contrary to her, I thoroughly recommend the holiday and painting experience with Jeremy and Waree.

This Christmas 2017 holiday I spent two weeks on the Mekong River in northern Thailand at the beautiful home of Jeremy and Waree Holton and their three entertaining sons. The house that the Holtons keep is charming, clean and spacious with a covered tiled veranda and tiled walkways outside. The location is ideal for sunsets on the Mekong while enjoying a walk by the nearby temple towards the local downtown area or sitting and drinking one of Jeremy’s nightly gin and tonics. Waree and her sister always made sure there was plenty of fresh fruit prepared for meal times, and Waree learned how to make some delicious vegetarian dishes to accommodate my diet. She is a very gracious hostess. Although lovely, staying at the house the whole time was not the plan. While there I went on many excursions with Jeremy and Waree as guides along the Mekong, all of them memorable, but of course some more than others. I enjoyed hiking up a steep mountain to see the many, many faces of Buddha greet me at every level; seeing strange and interesting foods at markets, some intriguing and some questionable (like marinated crickets); feeding the monks on a street before the sun rose; watching twinkly lighted balloons as they were held by children bobbing up and down the streets at a night market; witnessing scary giant sculptures on the fringe of a temple ground (hungry ghosts…a reminder of what will happen to you if you steal food!); a fence walking temple duck; seeing Waree’s family farm with fresh vegetables and papaya trees full of fruit; a group of local men drinking around a table, playing drums and singing songs; the awesome neighborhood Nag (Buddha’s serpent) with his gloriously glowing teeth from each of his seven heads; the very unusual and strange giant sculpture garden; mystical story murals from ceiling to floor in one temple to massive black boulders pushing flush against the outside walls of another temple; riding in the Holton family tuk-tuk or on the back of a motorbike with Waree driving; and then on the last morning of the day of my departure taking a boat ride on the gorgeous and very real red lotus lake with its millions of huge red lotuses…truly a feast for the eyes! In between all of the traveling, I did manage to create two acceptable art pieces. One was a mixed media Thai city scene of India ink and oil pastel; but the other was using acrylic and molding compound along with fast drying oil paint. For me, this last painting was why I came on this painting holiday. This painting was truly an experience to create as Jeremy led me through a process I had never tried before. This was a process that he uses, so his expertise in how to approach it was challenging and at times exhausting. However, as an artist and art teacher who wanted to be challenged with something new…. it was also refreshing and exhilarating as I pushed myself to listen and learn. It gave me insight to what it is like for my art students when I constantly push them to make changes, do more, etc. Good medicine! I succeeded in making a painting with subject matter I had never dreamed of using! If you seek change in your life…then Thailand is a wonderful place to find it. And a Thai Painting Holiday may just be the place to experience it!

Thank you so much, Mary. We really enjoyed your stay with us and as always we saw so many interesting things together. Your work was excellent and it was good to work with you on your paintings. It wasn't a one-way process, as you are a very experienced art teacher I too learnt from you.

I was very disappointed on this overpriced holiday. Having lived and travelled in Asia I was expecting 5 star intensive 8hours of teaching a day on all aspects of acrylic and oil painting. The cost for one day was the same for 3 nights in a better hotel in Nong khai and the train travel to Bangkok and 2 nights in a central 4 star hotel in Bangkok ! The art was the tutors style and no other way. There was no sketching or painting at the markets, or village trips as he only wanted still life or painting from memory or photos ... but nothing live or real so don't expect the experience of drawing in the countryside, markets or on the riverbank. Food was often bought from local market stalls or restaurants which was good but if you are someone who worries about food hygiene you could be scared. As I was the only person on my weeks course he spent more time looking after his young children than teaching. One day teaching contact time was only 1 hour.. the rest of the time I was left waiting for him to come back from child care.

Response from Jeremy H, other at Thailand Painting Holidays
Responded 23 Jan 2018
I am shocked and very very upset by this review Jane. Much of it is inaccurate. In five years of operation, this is the first time we have had anything less than a 5-star review as we are available for our guests 24 hours each day and do everything we can to provide our guests with everything they want. If you are thinking of staying with us and read this review please also read the other reviews. We are still in touch with many of our past guests and, with their permission, we can arrange for you to communicate with them so you can ask about their experiences staying with us. Our prices are low compared with other all in painting holidays. Our prices are much more than local hotel prices but the service we provide it totally different. We are in remote NE Thailand far from the tourist centres so we pick up our guests from the airport nearly two hour's drive away. We provide all meals and painting materials. Our guests can go on as many trips as they like to a variety of locations. We accompany our guests to markets, temples, massages, shopping as much as they want us to. I am available to provide tutoring 16 hours each day if that is what our guests want. We match our lives to the needs of our guests. In no way does this compare with local hotel prices. It is true that I teach art in my style and using techniques I have developed in oil pastel and inks or in acrylic texturing, quick-drying oils with glazing as this is what our guests want me to teach. If a guest wishes to do sketching, of course they can and I will help them. We even provide sketchbooks. If you had wanted to sketch or paint at the markets we would have been very happy to take you there, some of our guests do. Surely you understood that? The riverbank is next to where we paint and we gave you a sketchbook and asked you to sketch in preparation for a painting. To say that you didn't have the opportunity to sketch is simply untrue. I am amazed that you complain that there were no village trips. We took you to the village, rubber plantation, temple, lake and temple market after you arrived. Subsequently, we wanted to take you on more trips but you declined saying you wanted to spend the week painting. Most of the food was cooked by my wife who is a very good cook and all our past guests will attest to that. Many of our guests are vegetarian and we do provide some dishes from a local vegetarian restaurant as the food is good. I eat their food every day. As you are vegetarian Jane some of the dishes would have come from the restaurant not local market stalls. The food we provide is totally hygienic and to say otherwise is not only untrue but cruel to my wife. You never complained about the food and if you did not like a particular dish we not have served it again. There was always a choice of dishes for you. We are very small and can only accommodate a few guests at a time. During your stay you were our only guest which meant that I was available to assist you at any time. Most artists don't like the tutor looking over their shoulder while they work so I carry out other chores and check back regularly to see how they are going. When we have several guests I spend most of my time in the studio. I am quite sure that you always got several hours of teaching as you painted all day every day. It is difficult for me to understand why you wrote this negative inaccurate review Jane. I was under the impression that you enjoyed your stay with us although it is true that you kept putting off paying us until just before you left and at one point threatened not to pay us at all as I wanted to demonstrate a technique by applying paint to your painting. Let me say to anybody who reads this that we dedicate ourselves to providing our guests with everything they want and Jane's review is totally inconsistent with the holiday experienced by all our other guests.

This was a great experience. The instruction was good and every effort was made by Jeremy and Warlee to make us feel like we were part of the family. The lodging was clean and comfortable and the food was tailored to meet our individual taste (2 vegetarians and one not). I would highly recommend this school to anyone who wants to paint and learn about the Thai culture.

What a great time I had staying with Jeremy and his wife Waree, as well as their three boys, it's not only art you learn, there was also table tennis, and badminton to help relax at the end of the day. Jeremy's art tuition was excellent, stage by stage he showed me how to start with thumb nail sketches, developing them onto paper or canvas, then using two different tequniques he showed me how to bring the images to life in a different way that I was used to doing. It's a great way to take you out of your comfort zone, if you are looking for a new direction, with your art work. Waree is a lovely hostess, was always there to see if I needed anything, especially when I said I was not fond of chillies, she cooked us all beautiful Thai dishes, that I now dream of. And then there was the gorgeous sunsets across the river. You can be guaranteed a great friendly experience, both with art, and company.

Stayed for a weekend with Jeremy and Waree over the Naga fireball festival weekend and had a great time. Jeremy always responded to emails pretty instantaneously meaning I was confident he was going to be there to collect us from the bus station etc. I stayed with my six year old daughter who loved playing with the host's three sons. The room was big, light and airy and well-equipped with everything you need (conditioner cotton buds, hairdryer etc) we stayed all inc and got cereal and typical western style breakfast as well as fruit and coffee etc. Dinners were of a typical Thai style and delicious, eaten with the family. We would definitely visit again.

Hi Colette we really enjoyed having Charlie and yourself staying with us. It's a pity that the mourning period for the king meant there was no music in the festival but we had a good time anyway. I shall remember our dinner on the banks of the Mekong waiting for the oohs and ahhs for the fireballs. I hope you are enjoying your stay in Vientiane. Jeremy

I spent three weeks here as artist in residence. It was great to just get up in the morning, and after having breakfast on the beautiful terrace, to immediately start painting. Situated right on the Mekong River and opposite a Laos Wat there were plenty of subjects to choose from. By 9:30 the day had warmed up and being able to paint from the shaded terrace was a huge plus. The township of Phon Phisai was a pleasant 15 minute walk along the bank of the Mekong River. The town with markets, friendly locals and 'took tooks' racing everywhere offered even more interesting sujects to sketch or photograph. Mekong House with hosts Jeremy and Waree proved to be a wonderful place for me to work on plenty of plein air painting.

I cannot imagine how anyone can improve on this painting holiday! The whole atmosphere at Jeremy and Waree's boutique Painting Holiday 'home', is so conducive to relaxation and enjoyment that it should be the criteria by which all other holidays should be measured. Jeremy and Waree have struck the perfect balance between professionalism, luxury, and enjoyment. An inveterate professional, Jeremy inspired me to try and exceed my potential as a painter. I have the greatest admiration for him as a painter and I cannot overemphasise the amount of his knowledge and talent that he posseses. He is one of the great unsung of Australian artists. The best holiday that I have had. With or without the painting, and great value-for money! Anyone who needs to clarify details can always contact me on my mobile, which is +614046034588. Thank you Jeremy, Waree, and your beautiful family at Mekong House. Rohan Tillekeratne, Melbourne, Australia
