I was backpacking through south africa and some friend told me about this place, i made use of the pick up service... a bit of an adventure, but hey - it was fun! The lodge is very well organised, in the middle of nothing, by the ocean - lovely! The perfect place to relax and just do nothing - or... More

This lodge delivered exactly what it promised. It was unique, fascinating and incredibly relaxing. Far away from everything commercial, it really puts you in the Transkei as it was meant to be experienced. Be open minded, and appreciate the lodge for what it is, and what it has created around itself. We had a special time and will definitely be... More

This one has it all ! An eco-friendly backpackers lodge 40% owned by the locals. Here you find some of the best views of the East-Coast. It's fully solar-powered. Compost-toilets, rocketshowers, daily solar-cooked food/bread. Different and interesting workshops. Traditional herbwalks. Sangoma-meetings. A wood-fired bath on top of the dunes. Horse-riding over the rolling green hills. Amazing hiking. Camping, dorms and... More

Although we were the oldest guests there, probably by a few decades, we loved our stay and very much admire the ethic and accomplishments of Bulungula. The setting, the food, the ambiance, the activities were all first rate. My 20 year old daughter stayed there a few weeks later and also had a great time. It is primarily a young... More

My words cannot describe my experience of Bulungula. On arrival we were given a tour of the rocket showers and compost toilets. Not only was it the best shower I have had throughout my whistle stop tour of the wild coast but Bulungula was spotless. No need for mirrors Bulungula operates at it's own pace. Delicious pancakes served on the... More

Spent three nights here at the end of January - could have easily stayed for a week. After a scenic trip on a terrible road you arrive in a rural Xhosa village. Accommodation in the Mud Huts is basic, but clean and comfortable. There are also Safari tents which have a spectacular sea view. Drink a 750ml Milk Stout with... More

I hiked for 5 hours from Wild Lubanzi to Bulungula and wow was it worth it!! This completely environmentally friendly establishment was one of the best places I have ever stayed at. You get an amazing sense of calm and peace the minute you walk through the doors! The rocket shower is a brilliant invention. I would recommend to any... More

clean rooms, great scenery, beautiful and deserted beaches, super friendly people. it's tough to get there (be careful with a rented car, you'll probably crush your undercarriage) but it's worth every single bump and pot-hole. the inventions of the owner are incredible just to name the rocket-shower and secret-bath and you will have the only real african time in south... As everyone has said its a mission to get there but so worth the effort. I can only echo all the good reviews and definitely agree that those few negative comments are from people who have missed the whole point of Bulungula Lodge. We have an SUV so took a chance and drove the last 2 kilometres to the lodge... More

Thanks for the positive comments and good wishes - we appreciate the time you took to review Bulungula. One point of clarity for future guests: we now have a new dirt road all the way into the village so it is not necessary to have a 4x4 to get here any more.... The days of epic, muddy journeys in and... More

This was my third and longest stay at Bulungula Lodge. Almost all guests stay longer than planned and I was no exception. 19 days of absolute bliss! Exploring the village on foot was the highlight of my stay and each day was a discovery of secret beaches, gardens, valleys, rivers and mangroves, whales and sunsets. It must be the most... More
