The Cottage In The Wood is a very special dining experience in the heart of Whinlatter Forest. This was our second visit and once again, we were struck by the warmth and friendliness of the owner, from the telephone booking, through to arrival, throughout the meal and right up to departure.  The restaurant has a modern, but warm feel and... Living locally 6 of us came for dinner. It was delish, service excellent and a very warm welcome from all staff. Being foodies it was a delight to talk to the chef, who talks with real passion about the food they present. Also gave me a recipe for chocolate melting pudding which we can recommend along with the orange blossom... More

The Cottage in the Wood is everything and more that you would wish for in a small country house hotel. We have stayed there on a number of occasions and have really enjoyed every one,our only regret having been that we couldn't stay longer. On arrival you are greeted by a friendly member of staff, often the owner,Kath, shown to your... More

This would be a wonderful place to stay for the location alone but the welcome a visitor receives from Kath and the team makes for an exceptional stay. The outlook from the restaurant accompanied by a really innovative menu means that you can look forward to a good start and finish to every day. The number of awards won by... More

Came here for 2 nights to celebrate my husbands birthday. We received a very warm welcome when we arrived and were offered coffee and cake. We stayed in a Mountain View room which was decorated to a high standard. Lovely views out of our window. Bed very comfortable and bathroom had a jacuzzi bath which I relaxed in after a... More

Dear Linda We're delighted you enjoyed your visit and chose to celebrate your husband's birthday here at 'The Cottage'. Sorry we could not provide dinner for you on the Monday; we do usually close Mondays as we operate with a single team. However, because of the extraordinary success of the package you purchased, we were compelled to open Mondays over... More

We stayed here for our honeymoon for a few nights in the garden room. Our welcome of tea and cake certainly helped us relax after the stresses of the wedding, and Kath was a joy to meet! We were made to feel at home from the moment we arrived, without the welcome being instrusive. The room was clean and beautifully... More

Dear NTFree Thank you for your lovely review. It was a real pleasure to host your honeymoon and it's good to know you will return (The Garden Room is also great for anniversaries!). We've had a word with Phil (the Pheasant). He does tend to come & go and sometimes keeps unsociable hours, ie early! However, he is on tour... More

We have been going to the Cottage for years now and this time our daughter and son-in-law came to. We were made really welcome by Kath, Liam and their team. The rooms contunue to be upgraded and the menu has expanded enormouysly. Even with doing some quite strenuous walking we felt well fed on wonderfully imaginative food. We will be... More

Hello Gavin What can we say? Introducing the next generation in addition to your own long standing loyalty! It is rewarding for us when we reflect back on the base we started from and regular guests who have stayed with us over the years have been very much part of the journey. It will be ten years in June! We... More

Came here on a day out in the lakes on our anniversary for lunch. The welcome was exceptional and the service continued with the same atmosphere and a point was made in making sure we also left with good memories of our visit. Many hotels and restaurants could learn from them on how to treat a customer. Can't see how... More

Dear Neal & Lorna We're pleased you chose 'The Cottage' for your anniversary lunch and thank you for the feedback. We appreciate you supporting our case in the 'quality over quantity' debate. We do give portion size much consideration. As you will be aware, we offer two or three courses for lunch, however, for dinner the choice is three, four... More

Situated in woods with many walking routes direct from the hotels door, this small hotel which serves excellent food, is a great place to stay in the Lakes which is busy and very popular. The hotel has a range of rooms which range from small but well proportioned, to larger more luxurious rooms. All have good bathroom facilities e.g shower... More
