I believe that Rancho Leona is closed and has been since some time in 2010. If it reopens someone is welcome to delete this post, but for now I just wanted to warn people. I wouldn't want anyone else to show up expecting a room as the reviewer with the 8 March 2010 review did.
We stayed for a couple of days, the garden room was full of light but the other rooms were very dark. The place is built above a river bed with spaced between the planks but apart from the occasional mosquito we never noticed any bugs coming in. The beds were very hard but comfortable. The American manager was very nice...

This little hotel is located conveniently right on a busy two lane highway-convenient but noisy with all the truck traffic through the night. The food was great, the staff very helpful and engaging. They arranged a local birding guide for us ahead of time, but he backed out at the last minute so the manager spent hours on-line and making...

I didn't know what to expect for only $12, but the staff, the food, the tours were all above standard. We had traveled all over and spent the last four nights here, and are glad we did. Management is helpful and the sweat lodge is awesome! Donna Crippen, Arcadia CA
As the other reviewer mentioned, ownership, or management, has changed hands. The famed Leona is no longer there. While the new managers are pleasant, they do seem intent on leading "kayaking" tours even though they have no experience on the river. I guess I should have listened to my instincts and passed on this place. I should have noted that there had not been any reviews on this place for quite some time. I gather that the place has changed hands since those reviews. The new owners are friendly enough but when we checked in we were the only ones staying...

What a lovely, relaxing place to stay. We were there for three nights, and each one was really peaceful. There is not any of that awkwardness that one usually feels when in a bed and breakfast type place. Leona is fluent in English and Spanish -- and very willing to help. I would go back!
I spent my first three of ten days in Costa Rica at this spot, and didn't want to leave! It is an open, airy lodge within earshot of the gorgeous Sarapiqui River (when the river is high you can see it, too). Located within walking distance from several local rafting companies, the hosts here can point you in the right...

I spent 3 weeks at this large Rancho Leona lodge on the Sarapiqui River. You can kayak, learn spanish, hike the river and rainforest and just enjoy.
