Our group of 14 stayed locally last week and ate here all but one night, the staff were really friendly and helpful, really welcoming. We ate everything on the menu between us over the course of the week and had no complaints what-so-ever. Regarding the comments in a previous review about the lamb shank three of us had this and... Me and my family attended here for a meal only, we were disgusted with the quality of the lamb shank, more like a size of a chop, full of fat and gristle, swimming in an oily, overpowering mint gravy. Medium rare steaks, were still grassing in field, very poorly cooked, had a selection of potatoes choice ... Cold mash or... More

Went here for a meal only, with a few friends. After having to walk though about 7 people smoking right outside the door we arrived at the bar, which was very dark. Took us about 5 minutes Untill they realised we wanted serving. The drinks were a similar price as other pubs in the area. We ordered food which arrived... More

Went with my better half for a meal, the menu was pretty poor so went with a steak from the specials board.... I could have done with a set of teeth like a great white shark to chew it along with raw chips it was a delight hint of sarcasm spent most of the night trying not to see it... More

Dinner only. (Actually, 4 stars seems a bit generous - but only 3 would seem a bit mean). Staff were very jolly and helpful, food nothing special but good value (£10 for main course - I hadn't expected the "stuffed chicken with white wine sauce" to be accompanied by thick dark gravy; though at least it was tasty) and no... We stopped off in Pickering on our way through to Whitby. We knew there were a number of Trip Advisor rated places in the town so parked up and went for a walk into the centre. We came across the Black Swan and went in to see what was on the menu. As other reviewers have said the place could... More

A group of 5 adults went for dinner at the Black Swan, and we had a really good meal. The staff were attentive and could not have been more helpful and the food was excellent, especially at under £10 for a main course. There was a good choice on the menu and the specials board too. The Black Swan keeps... More

Booked on line, though I could have telephoned or popped in as it was not far from my home. As I had recently fallen, I was taking analgesics and asked (Matthew) proprieters son if I could be seated away from other customers. He was happy to do this. We chose drinks and food from the menu as well as the... More

Having decided against the expensive place over the road we chose the Black Swan because we were tired after a long drive and didn't want to keep looking. It turned out to be a great choice. The place was charming, not over-decorated but homely. The staff couldn't have been friendlier or more welcoming. The room had a comfortable bed, a... More

Pluses - excellent food and good value, attentive staff and the best english breakfast I have had in a long time. The down side is the accommodation - whilst clean, with crisp white sheets and soft towels the decor was tired. We were very cold and no one was able to say if the heating was about to come on...
