In the area for the Highclere Game Fair so decided to have dinner here. Shocking service in the bar, bored looking staff, no draught lager. Menu ridiculously overpriced with a naughty cover charge of £2 per person and a £3.50 charge for any vegetable side dish! My chicken and leek pie was inedible and we told the staff so.

We visited for the first time, the service was initially ok but not good until the all conquering Marco arrived, parked up in front of all of the diners seated outside and waltzed to the table with not even a hint of a SMILE to his customers, The food was good, did take a while to come but the waiter... We came here for dinner after the races, so we had no booking and were surprised to find they had a table at 8.30 (on a Saturday night!), I suppose that could be an indication as to what sort of dining experince we would have! We sat in the very dark bar area while they got our table ready. The... More

We went to the Carnarvon last night with another couple from London. I love the new look of the place, very gothic, but we were not greeted and had to ask at the bar twice before we were served a drink. When we were ready to be seated we stood in the restaurant doorway for about 10 minutes and asked... More

Booked one night, very disappointed, room unclean, bed was ok. No view at all looked onto a roof that took up most of the light. Staff looked unhappy, decoration of the place was dull and very depressive hardly any light. Tablecloths were unclean vases of flowers looked mucky. Food ok would of expected much better considering the name, but I... More

Just popped in for a drink to see what changes have happened. Quite significant but a bit shocking. If you do not like stuffed fish and deer and also countless deer skulls, then steer clear as it is full of them. The birds mentioned by another reviewer reminded me of Hitchcock! Bit of a shock on the drinks also with... More

Staff and food were OK....Room was horrible....scruffy with one dirty chair...a shower that was so small that there was nowhere to put anything...Room number 105. The breakfast was awful...you had to make your own tea with a teabag and lukewarm hot water in a vat or coffee that was luke warm.A few pieces of hard melon the only fruit...cereals in... More

We had booked a two night stay at the Carnavon Arms hotel through a Daily Telegraph promotion but after seeing the negative reviews, decided to go for lunch to check it out as we had stayed there under previous owners and been very satisfied. The car park was a mess with contractors vehicles and not much parking space and no... More

The hotel ambience is pretty nice (if you like stuffed animals...) and staff seem friendly but not that attentive. We arrived mid afternoon and booked into our room. Having booked via a Groupon deal and seeing other comments we were not expecting a lot from the room and whilst it was not 'boutique' in any way it was clean and... More

A business traveller - other hotels in Newbury were fully booked so by default stayed at Carnarvon Arms. There was a kind of builders yard in the car park which looked unsightly. Gardens were not maintained and I saw 2 benches on a narrow path facing this view and thought this is the last place I would sit and read... More
