The easier way to find the Hotel is to take the rood Via Roma to the Piazza V. Venetto, When you get to the Piazza V. Venetto take the first street to your left (Via S. Biaggio) then just take right turns every time and you will get to the hotel Sassi, last 200 hundreds meters to the Hotel you... More

The Sassi District at Matera is an UNESCO World Heritage Site and I had a fantastic time there. Staying overnight at one of those improvised cave accommodation added flavor to my overall experience there. The cave we dwelled in is bigger than I had anticipated and fitted the three of us with plenty of room to spare (though the bath... More

The Sassi district of Matera is a very special place, now fortunately showing more and more signs of a revival. The Hotel occupies several of the rooms and small apartments carved into the soft stone that characterises the whole district, altogether on six levels, so expect some walking between reception and your room. The rooms, corridors, breakfast area hardly have... More

We stayed in the suite for one night. It was spacious and nice. Unfortunately it was not as authentic as maybe some of the other rooms are - i.e carved out. It was an experience all the same. Pros: The view accross the balcony were great -into the old town. The breakfast was nice - as expected for Italy. The... More

I have nothing more to add to other reviewers but only confirm what has been said already. Our room (in a cave of course!) was spacious and comfortable. Our balcony had a stunning view overlooking the caves of Matera. Despite some negative reviews regarding humidity and cave dust in the rooms , we were lucky and did not experience any... More

We arrived in Matera in the rain, having previously booked two nights at the Sassi Hotel. After a long and frustrating search to locate it (a distinct lack of signs) we discovered that we faced a steep climb of about 40 metres high, via treacherously dangerous exposed cobblestone stairs, down which a torrent of water was pouring. I went on... More

Dear sir, following to your review please allow ourselves to highlight some points: 1) You actually booked through a travel agency that perfectly explains the kind of hotel we are and our location (and we know it for sure since we received a copy of the booking exactly as the clients does). We don't understand the reason why, if you... More

This hotel is difficult to get to because of the city's steep hills, but it is well worth the walk. As suggested by its name it is located in the historic Sassi district. The staff is helpful and friendly and the breakfasts and views are special. Stay there is you are in the area.

Hotel Sassi isn't easy to find because it's located in middle of the old Sassi. We've been circling the town before we decided just to park the car and walk...which is actually the only smart way to get around in Matera. Luckily, once you walk you'll find signs indicating to the hotel. The staff of hotel Sassi is very friendly... More

The hotel is in a wonderful place: a real unique spot! Rooms are beautifully Restored, although our shower was really small. Very poor room facilities: no wifi, old tv sets, poor minibar, no room service. Unfortunately the service is really poor: the staff is slow and not very helpful. Breakfast is dreadful: takes ages to get a (not very good)... More

The first hotel to open in the sassi, or caves of Matera. Each room is different, so can only comment on ours - carved out of a large cave (bigger than a London studio flat). "Balcony" outside formed from the entrance from which you can watch the birdlife - in particular the lesser kestrel. Staff excellent and helpful. Wonderful place.
