The Hotel Madrid is an institution in Las Palmas as it is supposed to have been where Franco stayed immediately prior to leaving for the mainland and the start of the civil war. It is now a well established hotel but can not comment on that as we only ever ate there or enjoyed a refreshment in the sunshine watching... More

Handsome building on attractive largely unspoilt square (rare in Las Palmas), used by locals as well as visitors, much of the authentic decor is retained. The cafe restaurant has something of a Cafe de Flore/Deux Magots atmosphere. (Perhaps a few too many repro retro posters in the dining room.) We did not stay there but enjoyed a very good goat... What a lovely place to have a drink or brunch. Outside terrace is a bless, when the weather is nice. Drinks and snacks are ok, service friendly. Gets busy on lunch and dinner times, mainly with locals, which is a good sign.

Service: The staff where all friendly and helpsome and the service where really high compared to the very fair price of the room. Location: If you want to live in the historical part of Las Palmas and close to the shopping area and local area with lovely restaurants the location is perfect! If you want to stay by the beach... We spent two nights here, after coming on a few trips to eat lunch only. The restaurant/bar is extremly popular, so the plaza is full of people on Saturday night. Not good if you want to sleep early and have a room facing the plaza. But perfect if you want to party. We had a lovely balcony facing the plaza... More

We stumbled on this iconic hotel by accident, and had the most amazing lunch time experience of our whole trip to Gran Canaria. Slow food and charming service, felt like a local - luckily we were quite smartly dressed! Don't bother if you are a vegetarian - veggie soup had hunks of ham hock in it! - but fab experience... We spent a couple of nights in Las Palmas in January and stayed in the fantastic Hotel Madrid. Beautiful architecture from the outside - painted a sunny yellow, with white shutters & wrought iron balconies, overlooking a pretty square. Inside, the decor has faded a bit and there are no mod cons, however it has bundles of charm and the... More

We had the meal of the day at lunchtime - excellent value for money - 10euros for 3 courses including a drink. We ordered two meals and there was enough for us and our two young children. Friendly and helpful waiters, and a lovely view over Plaza Cairasco all makes this a lovely spot for lunch. There's also a childrens... More

Classic old spanish hotel, apparantly unchanged, except for the bathrooms and TV, since Franco stayed there in 1936. (Ask for his old room, number 3). Somewhat eccentric management. Beautiful architecture. Its a tourist attraction in its own right and you can sit on your balcony overlooking the square and be photographed by other tourists. Bang in the heart of the... More
