This is not a pub. There is no real beer. We booked one of the cottages which turned out to be too far away to walk to the main place where we had the tasting menu. We asked (not volunteered) for transport to & from the restaurant which was granted. The evening couldn't be faulted. Service was perfectly paced, wine... More

We had a wonderful lunch to celebrate a friends Birthday. The waiter was attentive and knew about the food he was serving and kept the wine flowing. We enjoy the finest and that is what.we got. We will be back many thanks.

When does a B&B become a 'boutique hotel'? Leaving aside the number of rooms, which does tip the Marquis into the hotel category, the answer is, I think, the facilities. So, nice designer coffee , Nespresso machine, good, tubs of long-life milk bad. Modern art and lots of cushions good, badly stained carpet and table tops, bad. We ended up... More

I have just returned from a wonderful overnight stay at The Marquis. The stay was a birthday treat from my partner and lived up to expectations. We stayed in the Nailbourne room on the ground floor, it was decorated beautifully and well equipped for an over night stay. The staff were excellent and quick to respond to our needs such... More

The Marquis is a well presented "boutique" hotel which prides itself on the restaurant. The food is very good and well presented, although if on a "deal" make sure the waiters are aware of the deal you are on. The bedroom we stayed in was comfortable and well appointed although you could not open the windows for fresh air. Bathroom... More

Together with two other couples we have a weekend away early each year and this year we tried this interesting hotel. From the outside it looks fairly unexciting, and we drove past it once missing it completely, but once inside it's a lovely hotel. We booked a superior room and had a wide bed with plenty of cushions, a lounge... More

Not much competition in this area and hard to find if not local, although it is on the main Alkham road. Access to car park a nightmare in snow as very steep and cambered so don't bring a big car. Welcome and ambiance very good and room had some great personal touches. We found a good offer and had champagne... More

Having been here before, we experienced the gastronomic 6 course with wines menu. The flavours and choice of ingredients impressed us beyond belief. The room we stayed in had the comfiest bed and we were glad we could drag ourselves to bed after such a lovely feast. The service is exceptional from every member of the team. I cannot recall... We booked a room last minute on Good Friday. This is the second time we have stayed and both times, dinner and breakfast were superb. The rooms are comfortable and so stylish, we are now using their ideas to decorate our home!

We have often eaten at the restaurant at the Marquis but this was our first overnight stay and I had booked the suite for a wedding anniversary treat - and a treat it was. The bed was large, comfy and piled high with cushions and pillows and from the bed there was a view over the beautiful Alkham Valley. A... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Come on in. Take a look around. You might just be surprised. For while the Alkham Valley, indeed Alkham village itself, suggests genteel old England at its most rural and unspoiled, the Marquis itself is something else... It's a strikingly contemporary restaurant and hotel. The product of a major renovation in 2008, what was once the village's pub, The Marquis of Granby, has been utterly transformed. Space, light, fine furnishings and beautiful fabrics and the opportunity to fine tune every detail hasn't been missed. The restaurant is a revelation. Head Chef Charles Lakin's seasonally inspired and locally sourced menus are as fresh as they are imaginative, and the elegant 21st century styling is exceptional. Queen sized pocket sprung beds are swathed in the finest cotton. Sumptuous fabrics dress windows and chairs. And an eclectic collection of art completes the mood, the mix and the personality that makes this place unique. Boutique chic in the heart of the English countryside? You've found it. You've arrived. ... more   less
