I was booked this hotel as part of an overnight business trip and wasn't expecting such a lovely hotel, in a lovely locaiton. This is was direclty opposite the cathederal and was in a lovely location, I walked to the river for drinks which was nice. I only used the room and no other facilities but they were large, very... The Hotel is quite quirky, the room have slopping floors as well as the corridors and hallways but it apart from the quirkiness, it feels tired. We had an upgraded room but the was mould in the shower and wallpaper pealing from the wall. The Restaurant was excellent however and worth a visit. The worst thing for me was the... More

With my daughter attending Exeter University I am presently visiting a few times a year; this time an overnight stay was required and we chose ABode. The last time I stayed here it was still called the Royal Clarence, and that was in about 1997. Sadly, nothing much has changed. But let's be positive. The ABode has, quite simply, the... More

"Comfortable", "Desirable", "Enviable"... have you ever heard of "Peaceful?" Room certainly was not, and being situated directly above reception and the restaurant area, served more as an acoustic chamber, amplifying noise from all corners of the hotel and the streets outside, whether it be the dripping toilet cistern (which I could do nothing about as it was behind a wall),... This hotel trades on one thing: its location. It is happily situated in close proximity to Exeter Cathedral and the main shopping district of the city. That being said, the service from top to bottom leaves a LOT to be desired. The staff needs a crash course on how to interact with guests. There were a couple of notable exceptions... More

I was upgraded to a large room with a wonderful view of Cathedral. The hotel is charming and "eccentric" ("quirky" was used by an earlier contributor and fits the description perfectly). There is a problem with the lift, but this is due to other guests not shutting inner door, (it is an old building and I assume that due to... More

In spite of many positive reviews I must say that I was quite diappointed with my most recent stay. The staff was rather rude, breakfast was always very slow (several guests complained or sent food back as it was cold or not prepared properly). The location is great however, the service lacks - it is too bad. Have stayed here... More

My brother booked a "fabulous" room for the weekend for my husband and I for my 50th birthday along with a family lunch for 19 guests. The room was indeed fabulous - very spacious and well equipped with a huge, comfortable bed and beautiful view of the cathedral. The bathroom was equally fabulous - again very spacious with a roll... The first problem we found was how to get to the front of the hotel to frop our bags off, in the end we learned of an entry off of the high street, press an intercom and they lower a bollard (should have put this prominently on their website) that allows you to drive around in front of the Cathedral.... This is our second stay at the Abode in Exeter. It's a perfectly fine hotel. The location is lovely once you have found out how to reach it by car. Check in was efficient and friendly. We had a room overlooking the back of the hotel which was fine as we were only there overnight and it didn't matter to... More
