I was on the train heading north from Victoria intending to get off at Nanaimo, but a tour director, upon hearing that I was a carpenter, suggested that I go a bit further to Qualicum Beach then head west to Port Alberni because they have the only operating steam-powered lumber mill in North America. I stayed at the Fat Salmon Backpackers several times when work in Port Alberni and inclement weather precluded me from returning home. The hosts went above and beyond the call of duty to make me feel welcome. In the summer they host barbecues for friends and lodgers alike on their front deck.
