I found Melville International Backpackers a great place to stay. It's in a really safe neighborhood and close to everything in Melville. A 5 minute walk to Campus square, the bars on 7th Street, a grocery store, and other misc stores. I came for some much needed R & R and was able to feel very relaxed here. However, other... More

The place had the feel of a rehabilitation facility( not that I have ever been). I stayed at the backpacker for 3 days. We paid our fees on time, and cleaned up after ourselves. As an African American I have had to ignore ignorance, but never on this level. Upon departure, my father asked if he could stay another night.... More

Terrible bagpackers! lets start with the fact that the place doesn't have real bagpackers facilities. No front desk where you can ask for help, no bar, and no gathering place during the winter (there is a pool area, but it's useless in the winter) The room's have a small kitchen, which the fridge didn't work, and no utilities (plates,bowls...) But,... More

I stayed at Melville for 2 nights, when I got there I was given a bed in an empty dorm, tired from my flight I went to bed and when i woke up, all my valuables were gone. They let complete strangers (who pretended to be looking for rooms to rent a month later) in my room, and apparently they... More

Stayed at Melville three nights. The biggest plus is def. the location which is very safe ... actually so safe that you can walk around night and day. Taxi busses goes from the main road only 1 minutes walk if you dare to go touristy in the downtown hussle and bussle of Joburg. Though, if you are out to party... More

Nice, small and clean hostel in a safe area of Johannesburg. Main Street and 7th Street are close by, with restaurants, bars, internet cafe´s and supermarkets. Peter and Jeffrey will help you out with whatever you need. And do take them up on their offers for Soweto tours and airport transfers by a guy named Freedom, he´s good!
