Having first discovered Castlecoote as a derelict building with no roof and totally uninhabitable back in the early 1990's. This house is brilliant for a day trip to not just to stay. There is a ruined castle in the grounds which kids can climb over and into, its on the banks of the river, so pink fishing net at the ready, with an orchard that is ready to explore. This house is not to be missed and has been lovingly restored to its former glory. The bedrooms are beautifully decorated. We stayed in the Gunning room, which was spacious and had a four poster bed. We stayed over a weekend in June 2008 and enjoyed a quiet and relaxed weekend. Our expectations of this type of place have been fully met at Castlecoote House. The house is situated about 15 minutes drive outside of Roscommon on the site of a former medieval castle. Some of the old fortifications are incorporated into the current house, a restored Georgian mansion, built from the ruins of the castle. The owner has spared no expense in the restorations.
