We booked and paid online using the YHA web site several weeks ahead only to find on arrival at 6.30pm that our booked room was no longer available and we were offered a small internal twin room without windows as all that was left. This is not the standard I would expect from a hostel operating under the YHA name.... More

“This YHA enjoys a great setting but needs some money spent on it”

Havelock is a great place to visit, but this YHA needs some money and a female touch. It has a run down feel and we avoided the kitchen and bathrooms as much as we could. Having said that, the manager is friendly and welcoming. With a bit of thought and a few dollars this place could be great. More

We came across the Havelock YHA by chance, reading an old Lonely Planet guide. There is no mention of it in the YHA pamphlets we picked up on our way around the south island of NZ. “Good base for walking the Nydia Track”

Reasonable YHA within an old school house. The hosts were very helpful at arranging transport and accommodation for the Nydia Track; they actually run one of the I-sites in the village. Unfortunately the hostel felt a bit run-down and did not seem to attract so many guests. The kitchen was not as clean as it could be, but was ok. More
