Las Vegas Off the Beaten Path

Flashing lights and glitzy glam are more iconic to The Strip than its jingle-jangle of slot machines, the magical flutter of auto-shuffled blackjack cards, and the mesmerizing twirl of the roulette wheel — but what is it about Sin City that only the locals are privy to? This list will give you a taste of Las Vegas that often gets overlooked by those starstruck by all the shimmer of this glamorous town!

Jessica L's City Tips

  • As with many of the cities in the Wild West, it's best to rent a car to get the most out of your trip. Take a day trip out to the neighboring sites, too, like the Grand Canyon!
  • The Strip may be fairly walkable, but distances may not be as short as they appear! Save yourself a lot of trouble and strife by looking at a map before booking your hotel room.
  • Casino buffets may be world-famous and (sometimes just barely) worth the price-tag, but there are plenty of local cheap eats in the area, too, so keep your eyes peeled!
  • Valet parking is free in Vegas, so at least tip your valet!
  • Las Vegas is a hugely service-based city, so be a conscientious visitor and leave anyone who's helped you with your bags, your car, or your hotel room at least a few bucks.
  • Avoid hypothermia from walking into a 55ºF casino from the desert's blistering 120ºF by bringing a jacket, a shawl, or some other longsleeved layer to throw on when you're indoors.
  • You'll spend a lot of time walking, so pack comfy shoes. Some high-end locations do have a dress code, though, so don't forget a nice dress pair if you're gonna get your fancy on!
  • Stay hydrated! Bottled water from the local grocery or convenience store will be much cheaper than at your hotel, so stock up in advance.

What happens to all the old neon signs from Hotels of Vegas's Past? Grab a cab uptown to The Neon Museum, known fondly as 'The Boneyard,' and see for yourself. Here lie the metal-and-glass artworks that once proudly displayed the names of legendary hotels like The Stardust and The Sahara, which have long since been retired, leaving behind their legacy for the curious to unearth. The guides are amazing, and this place is definitely worth penciling into your itinerary — you'll come out of here better able to appreciate the history, culture, and art of this glittering 'City of Sin.'

    Tips
    • Not many cab drivers know where the museum is, so you'll want to look up or print out directions before you climb in.
    • Tours run rain or shine, both during the day and the evening (note that you'll have to book them in advance).
    • I recommend the night tour, of course, but catching an evening slot can be a bit of a crapshoot. Try your luck by giving 'em a call if you only see day tours listed on the website!
    • Leave your camera bags, professional lenses, and tripods at the hotel — this tour is very strict on its "no professional photography" policy.
    • Leave your flipflops for the hotel pool! Like in any good graveyard, broken "bones" of metal and glass are scattered here, so keep your toes protected from harm with sneakers.

If you're feeling nostalgic for that retro vibe, join the local scene in the Fremont East area of downtown Las Vegas, and check out Insert Coin(s) for some classic coin-operated games from the '80s (like Galaga, Frogger, and Tapper). Though it's debatable whether this bar is a kitschy ripoff or an exhilarating blast from the past, it's well worth the experience of being able to enjoy a moderately priced pitcher of beer while challenging your friends to a competitive match between Chun-Li and Ken to go down in Street Fighter history. Some machines even have a custom-built shelf for you to rest your drink on while you blast your way through zombies in House of the Dead. Just be careful not to spill here — you're playing with precious artifacts of gaming history, after all. Respect the game, and the game will respect you, too.

    Tips
    • After you're done, try The Commonwealth for some more drinks, and The Golden Nugget for cheaper slots than you'll find on The Strip.
    • Drop by during the afternoon if you want your pick of the house! It's much quieter during the day, and it becomes more bar than arcade as the evening hours draw closer.
    • Spend enough time at the bar, and you may be able to woo the 'tender into letting you play a few free rounds of console games...

Live like that high roller you came to Vegas to be and drive that exotic car you've always dreamed of owning through the winding desert streets of Red Rock Canyon. Companies like Exotics Racing and World Class Driving give you your pick of the litter, from Corvettes and Lamborghinis to Ferraris and Porsches. The staff at World Class are absolutely top class themselves, and make you and your pals feel like a royal entourage being escorted through the Nevadan desert. Even the manager, Sam, responds to everyone who leaves a review on TripAdvisor. Now that is customer service!

Hate the whole overly-polished brass and Photoshopped shine of Sin City? Looking for the most hipster place in town? Ditch the pricey hotel cocktails on The Strip and do as the locals do: head to the Double Down Saloon for a shot or two of their 'A** Juice Special.' You'll be commanded to 'Shut Up and Drink' as soon as you walk in the door of this classic dive bar, so you know just what you're getting yourself into from the get-go at this no-frills, grungy joint — perhaps the most anti-Vegas venue to grace this not-at-all-dry desert town.

You don't have to be an appreciator of high art in order to enjoy your time in Las Vegas's 18b Arts District — and in fact, you'll find a lot more there in the way of psychedelic graffiti and grungy street art than Renoirs or Monets. Wander along past the art galleries and studios, past the strip malls and auto repair shops, and soon enough you'll fall across this amazing hidden gem: Art of Flavors Gelato. It may not look like much from the outside, but never again will you have the opportunity to try ice cream flavored like fried-chicken-and-waffles, bacon, or even sweet-corn-and-kidney-beans (especially as they rotate in new specialties on a daily basis)! If you're a purist, though, AoF's classic flavors are solid choices too: The chocolate is a favorite amongst the locals, and definitely worth seeking out this small venue for!

Head north from The Strip for some shopping that won't quite break your wallet at the Las Vegas North Premium Outlets. Here you'll find everything from the big brand names, but with massive price cuts that you won't find in the heart of The Venetian or Caesar's Palace. Pick up a nice new Coach handbag for your mom, or a new pair of Hush Puppies to take home for yourself. But the real hidden gem of a shop lies just on the other side of the Charleston Underpass from the outlet: the Gambler's General Store, a treasure chest of any and all things gambling — or as the locals like to call it, 'gaming.' Browsing for souvenirs here will not only save you a lot of cash, but also help you avoid that trademark Vegas kitsch that every hotel souvenir shop on The Strip is filled with.

So you've already checked out the Mob Museum and are now wandering around The Flamingo's pool area, looking for those live flamingos, when all of a sudden you stumble across this curious little monument to history, tucked away in the greenery. The 'Bugsy' plaque may not be much of a sight to some, but it's certainly a (literally) cool spot off the beaten Strip, and gives you plenty of 'mobster extraordinaire' type food for thought when you get back to catching more rays poolside.

Who says that the desert can't also boast an impressive aquarium and hunting/fishing emporium? At the Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World, you'll forget that you're still in Sin City as you traverse a 'landscape' of wildlife displays and dioramas of the woods, and massive tanks of marine specimens that are very far from home. When you're not having staring contests with exotic fish, weighing a hunting rifle in your palms, or traversing the packs of excited children running about the store, you'll even be able to find Las Vegas's characteristic clamor of slot machines out here in the false wilderness. A dying breed — even in a city that lauds the flashy nostalgia of the 1980s — this used records store carries everything from vinyl to Blu-ray, as well as a solid collection of console games, instruments, books of all genres, and more. Like at all good consignment stores, you'll really need to roll up your sleeves and dig in deep to find a treasure, but treasures you are sure to find at Zia, as people roll in and out, toting their carefully preserved media disks in and exchanging them for cash or store credit. If you think your dusty volumes might do better in a more caring home, bring 'em along with you and make your vacation a generous one!

Drop by for dinner, or just to grab a cocktail to go with dessert, and sit by the firepit in this cozily neon-lit lounge. The service is phenomenal here, and the food and drinks spectacular. Definitely order the bowl-sized liquor concoction, dubbed 'the Scorpion,' to start with, and get ready for huge portions of everything else on the menu, from steaks to sandwiches and even massive breakfast platters of fruit and french toast.
