Quick Visit to Bath by Solo Female

Was fortunate enough to visit Bath, albeit for only a day and a half earlier this month. Arrived from London on a Sunday about 11 AM, train was a bit delayed. And wow, what a change from the hustle of London! Thinking, "This is more like it," I hauled my bags up the hill (not steep) to the YMCA (was on a budget). Maybe a 10 minute walk, actually passed it at first, it's tucked behind some other buildings, but a nice young man walking back the same way showed me to it. After checking in, I took off walking, soon came to the Crescent, in fact I was at the Georgian House Museum within an hour of arriving at the station.

Five rooms here are open, with a docent in each room. In addition to an informational handout describing the contents of the rooms, they offer additional explanations and answer questions. These ladies are wonderful, very nicely done.

Then a short walk away is the Costume Museum, very interesting; the earliest dress (from 1610 I think) was silver silk - so delicate and beautiful. Altho I liked the older dresses the best, I also enjoyed the 20th century ensembles. I'm inspired to take up embroidery after visiting there!

Then I went on ahead to Aqua Sulis, where I spent all of 3 hours, until they closed. Wonderful guided tour, but also got an audio guide which provides all the little details.

Stopped for a good Thai dinner, then walked about a bit more until 8 PM, when the Bizarre Bath Walk started. This guy, along with his partner Stew (won't give anything away here) were hilarious! Time (and $$) well spent. Then back to the Y for a good nights sleep.

Up early next morning, packed, had breakfast, stored bags in locker there at the Y. Walked back down the hill stopping for more coffee, and visited Bath Abbey, absolutely beautiful church where the 1st king of England (?Edgar) was crowned.

Next took this free walk; what a great guide, older gentleman who set a surprisingly brisk pace for his age! He was a wealth of historical and architectural information, so glad I went! I had covered most of the same ground the previous day, but hearing the stories and some of the history made it much more special.

Actually skipped out very near the end of the walk to pick up my bags. Then back to the station for train to York. As you can probably tell, enjoyed myself very much, only wish I had planned for a few more days in Bath. So peaceful, quiet and beautiful. If I had it to do over I would have spent more time there!
