Venice for frequent visitors, trip down memorylane and finding out what we haven't seen yet...
Day 1, land on Marco Polo and take the Vaporetto to Venice.
Some novels you can read to get you in the mood:
The Remedy, by Michelle Lovric
The Dante Trap, by Arnaud Delalande
The Foating book, by Michelle Lovric
Memoires of Cassanova of course
Bit expensive but nice view (15E one way ticket), it can get very crowded and the boats come around every 30 minutes. There's a coffeebar next to the vaporetto stop
Not the best hotel in town, but okay breakfast and location are good. Sometimes they have good deals (if you don't mind a rude staff), the rooms are pretty, although some are small (first time we had a foldable toilet in a hotel bathroom..)
For this hotel: get off the vaporetto at 'Fondamente Nuove' from where you can walk up to the hotel (when you get here by train it really is a 2 minute walk to the hotel). You get to see a different side of Venice, more everyday life, locals.
14: 00 After checking in, getting settled and maybe grabbing a panino or pasta near the hotel (it's a big shopping area with touristy restaurants, so not too expensive), it's finally time to see this beautiful palazzo from the inside.
Beautiful works of art, but the architecture is amazing as well! And what about the view (Rialto market across Canal Grande)
15:30 After the visit to Ca' d'Oro take the traghetto around the corner to Rialto Mercato and vist the flee market. Also another taste of real life Venice.
16:30 After that, just go for a walk through S. Polo and S. Croce and go into every open church you'll see (and of course lots of shopping can be done while wandering the alleyways.
19:00 nice meal, not too expensive
Across the street there is a nice modern wine bar, so if you want to go for a drink first: no problem!
Day 2 Breakfast in the really lovely parlour of the hotel,
09:30 than off to see something different, great tour and also good inexpensive coffee at the bar, also the best view on Canal Grande: this is the place where broacasts of the Regata takes place. (also good view on Palazzo Balbi and Grassi) You can make reservations at the reception of the university.
Strange architecture in the auditorium, get acquinted with a not to nice part of modern Venetian history....And get to know how university life in Venice is nowadays
12:00 Take the Vaporetto to S. Zaccaria and from there walk up to the museum (check openingtimes ahead, sometimes they're not open in the afternoon).
12:45 After this visit walk through the Via G. Garibaldi, again a totally different vibe, a bit more village- like. Maybe you can get a nice primo and secondo at one of the homy taverns.
After that walk towards the Biennale through the Giardini Pubblici and the Parco della Rimembranza (also good picnic place!) It really is a totally different Venice
14:30 Make your way back to the Fondamenta Sant'Ana and cross the bridge to Isola S. Pietro, great views, good vibe, visit the old cathedral
15:15 Take the other bridge of the island. from there make your way to the arsenale, keeping close to the water for the best view (some perfect photo-moments)
16:00 this really is a MUST SEE, the chapel is really marvellous, breathtaking, glorious
16:30 wander back to S. Zaccharia and visit the church where once the wealthiest nuns used to live and attend mass. (read up on this, mind-puzzling history!)
Just around the corner you will find the Santa Maria della Pieta, where onec Vivaldi used to teach and lead the choir. (if the Naval museum is closed earlier in the day, you might want to see if this church is open, since they tend to close a bit early in the afternoon)
17:30 just slowly make your way to cannaregio, some easy shopping, maybe have an icecream and so you arrive at the ghetto again, where you can have a simple and not too expensive meal right here (when you are more into hebrew food, you might want to go a bit further to gamgam).
After dinner it's just a short walk back to the Lista di Spagna, to the hotel. Lots of good Icecreamplaces on the way and shops are open untill late.
Day 3 9:00 we got to have breakfast at the fabulous Palazzo Paruta (yummie crepes suzette) to celebrate our first anniversary, you can always check with the more upscale hotels if they serve breakfast without lodging to treat yourself to something special.
After that, take a nice walk around the area, just take it all in, walk back to the Chiesa S. Stephano to light a candle and this time visit the part in the back (there's a fee) with the beautiful paintings.
From there find your way to Rosa Salva and pick up a cake you like (it's all delicious!) and drink a coffee at the bar like all the locals do. Take it back to the hotel to get it to roomtemperature. Meanwhile get yourself a nice panino in the area and pick up a bottle of nice veneto sprakling (if you had the Metodo Classico Chardonnay from Loredan Gasparini, try to get another bottle for this celebration!)
Afterwards take the Vaporetto to Accademia again, cross the bridge and see if there is a nice exposition at Palazzo Loredan.
14:30 make reservations to have a wine tasting here again, still the lovely people they were last year, nothing is too much, make you feel right at home!
15:15 take a nice walk all rthe way up to the Punta Dogana, great view, impressive!
15:45 if you haven't been to this eyecatcher: this is your chance!
16:30 (november- March 15:00)
35 minutes gondola ride, take the Vaporetto across to S. Marco square, make reservations via the website
17:15 Time for our traditional coffee at the bar to get that vibe again!
17:45 you might want to go to the hotel to freshen up a bit (maybe drink some left over bubbly)
18:30 take the Vaporetto back to Rialto bridge and from there walk to the Bistrot, get the same table as last time, so romatic in the alcove, with gondola's passing by, the food is again superb and histocally correct, again enjoy the vibe and the food and be utterly content!
Day 4 09:30 after breakfast walk to Fondamente Nuove (you will pass some supermarkets on your way over, so you can get water etc. over there).
Here you can take the Vaporetto to the burial island of Venice, something you simply have to see once in a lifetime.
See for instance the grave of Stravinsky.
11:00 Of course we have to do some glass shopping.
Lovely items at PescePesce/ FioriFiori
Visit Palazzo da Mula, when they're open, they have some interesting expositions.
12:30 Just a little bit further you can visit this old church (there's a small terrace next to the church where you can grab a drink and a bite)
13:30 Of course you'll have to gaze one more time at the famous glassmaking process (you can see the glassblowers at work in many workshops)
14:30 Take Vaporetto 41 all around the Arsenale (fantastic view!) to get to Giudecca. It takes some time to get there, make sure you have a good seat with a view, since the trip offers some wonderful views.
It's a nice walk across this island, have a nice glass of wine along the way and walk all the way up to Molino stucky, a strange building for Venice-atmosphere, but fascinating!
17:00 Take the Vaporetto from Giudecca across to Dorsoduro and from there walk o ver to the accademia bridge, cross it, walk up to Rialtobridge, cross it (meanwhile grab a slice of pizza on the go) and go for the traditional drink in the oldest bar in town.
Try the Malvasia, unlike any other wine in the world!
After that, take the traghetto across to cannaregio and stroll a bit to the north. You can get some great food in the more remote area of this part of town.
Day 5 09:00 after a last breakfast in the beautiful brakfasthall, take your luggage to the reception, check out and park your luggage here.
Go over to Chiesa S. Geremia, see the remains of S. Lucia, impressive...
After that, visit Palazzo Labia wher RAI is established.
Go via the Ponte Cosntituzione (modern bridge, puzzling though) to Piazzale Roma to get bustickets for the airportbus and check the schedule.
stroll through the Papadopoli park.
10:30 not open on mondays and you'll have to check the openinghours since they tend to change, but if it is open, you're in luck! This natural history museum is established in a gem of a building, at Fontego dei Turchi. You'll get to see all kinds of strange creatures that live in the laguna.
11:30 after the visit stroll through this area until you reach this great place to just sit around, watch people, share a pizza and drink a nice Italian beer
After the beer and pizza just walk towards the rialto area, meanwhile doing some shopping, cross rialto bridge, via Campo S. Bartolomeo towards cannaregio, just check out all the churches on your way over.
13:30 Great place for Luncheon at Malibran, choose the day speciality, can't go wrong with that one... also: great desserts!
14:30 Leave some time for a visit to the Wagner Museum in this Casino (also mentioned in several Venice-books). The entrance is a bit hard to find, so before you go look at google maps to recognize the entrance...
After this visit it's just a small walk over to the hotel to get the luggage and go to Piazzale Rome again to catch the train to the airport,
hope you've enjoyed your stay!
