These are the things I liked best about the wonderful city of Luang Prabang when I went there in January 2011. These items are not in order, just simply a list of things to do.
While this place is a little out of town, the hospitality and view from the river are worth it. When booking splurge for the river view. You won't regret it when you are eating breakfast on your front porch looking at the great view of the river and Mount Phousi off in the distance.
Go the to 3rd or 4th food cart on the right side of the main street (where the night market is) and get and Oreo Coffee Shake. He makes the best. Also he makes a great Banana, Oreo, Nuttela, Chocolate and Cream shake too. Can't go wrong for 20.000 kip.
Climbing the stairs is totally worth it. The view is amazing. Explore both sides and make sure to take your camera. It costs 20.000 kip, so don't forget to keep that in your pocket.
This is a great place to grab a coffee and get a great view of the river. They also make a mean cherry coke.
Traditional Lao food done right.
Any food stall is pretty good with these, but getting one from the guy who makes the really good Oreo Coffee shakes is not a bad idea. Either way, get one. They are awesome. Find a spot on the stairs up to Mount Phousi and watch the street while eating a great lunch. The bread is better at lunch than dinner.
The restaurant attached to the hotel of the same name is worth a stop for an upscale night. The menu goes on forever, the service is great and the food is fantastic.
We took the kayak trip to Pak Ou caves. I wouldn't have seen the caves any other way. The view was amazing and the guides knew what they were doing with those kayaks.
After about 6pm the streets become lined with vendors. This is a great place to pick up any gifts for people back home.
There is a Bamboo Bridge that goes over the river. Pay the 4,000 kip to cross the bridge. Enjoy the view from the other side.
This is a great little museum with quite a few exhibits. The Wat outside is awesome to see too. I enjoyed walking around looking at how a monarchy lived in the 1950s and 60s.
