10 Sri Lanka highlights with children

15 Apr 2010

travelling with 2 children (2 and 6) can be hard work but Sri Lanka had loads of great things to keep them entertained.

  • 1. Kandyan Dancing
    Kandy, Kandy District

The Kandyan dancing was fantastic the girls were completely hooked for the whole hour and a half.

  • 2. Little Adam's Peak
    Ella, Uva Province

The grown up's might have managed to struggle up the huge Adam's Peak at Delhouse but Little Adam's Peak at Ella is great for children a nice 4km walk through the tea plantations with brilliant views of Ella Gap

  • 3. Train Journeys

Travelling by train in Sri Lanka is a great way to meet local families and the views are fabulous. The children loved how the sellers leap on at the stations with fruit and drinks.

  • 4. Udawalawe National Park
Udawalawe National Park, Ratnapura District, Sabaragamuwa Province

The early morning safari to see wild elephants was one of the best expierences we have ever had. Was much better than the orphanage.

  • 5. Build sandcastles on the beach at the Lucky Tuna
    Unawatuna, Galle District

With brilliant staff and good priced great food its the top spot on the beach for families

  • 6. Swim with the Fish and Turtles
    Unawatuna, Galle District

At the left hand end of the beach the reef comes close to the shore and its possible to hire equipment to snorkel. The coral isn't in great condition but the variety of fish was great and a passing turtle was amazing, all this close enough in for our 6 year old to enjoy it.

  • 7. kandeviharaya Buddha, Dikkewella

Sri Lankas largest Buddha stands a high as an 8 story building. Best of all you can climb up to the top and have a look in to the head!! Downstairs is a slightly macarbe exhibition of what happens to people who do not lead a 'good' life.

  • 8. Blow Hole
    Tangalle, Hambantota District

The girls liked the pretend blow hole in the visitors center better that the real thing mainly because they could control it themselves.

  • 9. Watch the cliff jumpers off the Galle Fort walls
    Galle District, Southern Province

Also take a walk along the walls at dusk and see the lighthouse

  • 10. Turtle Hatchery
    Hikkaduwa, Galle District

After visiting a hatchery at Koggola and not being impressed with the conditions of the adult turtles we visited this one cautiously. However the adult turtles that were kept were there because they were too sick or injured to be released and the babies were all released within 24 hours of hatching. My daughter wants to go back and work there when she is older.
