What to do in Borneo
superb aquarium with a fun science centre- duck under dome was my favorite and I never realised that there are so many fish under the oil rigs!! WOW My children loved the snakes but my wife was just scared, Ity bity snakes, cute. The otter family was fun to watch. Adults plan on a 1-2 hour visit, with kids book at least half a day.
good half day out, not too far to walk with great Orang Utans (Wild Man in Bahasa Malay). 40 min out of Kota Kinabalu town, Really liked the otters.
Great snorkelling at a protected park just a few minutes boat ride out from KK town. Go early in the morning - seas calmer. You can also learn to dive. Plus other water sports. Nice forest a short walk from the beaches.
exciting white water rafting on the Padas or Kiulu rivers.
The highest mountain in Se asia, wonderful forests, great biodiversity. Are you fit??? walk up it to see the sunrise but book well in advance. Bring warm clothes, chilly on top. And the view at dawn is superb.
Soak the cares away at poring, book this for the day after walking up mount kinabalu and soak away the muscle pain. Or just do the canopy walkway butterfly farm or the forest walks.
Borneo has some of the very best diving, google on Sipadan, Layang Layang, Lankayan, Mabul, Kapali. To brush up on your fish and marine life knowledge before diving go to aquaticakk.org
The Maliau basin is sometimes called "The Lost World of Sabah". It was discovered in 1947 from the air, but it was only in 1988 that a first expedition reached into the forests. Elephants, Rhino and many other wildlife can be seen. Maliau Basin is certainly a stunning area, with superb scenery, flora and fauna. It is unspoilt by tourism and remains a real wilderness.
see wild orang utans up close as they are rehabilitated to living in the jungle.
The Turtle Islands Park, also known as Pulau Penyu National Park. This park comprises of three islands, which are Pulau Selingan, Pulau Bakkungan Kecil and Pulau Gulisan. The Park is famous for its green and hawksbill turtles, which lay their eggs on the beaches of the islands. The islands are protected within marine parks on both sides of the Malaysian and Philippine borders.
Turtles nest year round, but are more common between July and October when the seas are calmer.
Book in advance if possible since space is limited.
