With this list you can see all of Rome's highlights and more! Make sure you bring good walking shoes!
This list is meant to give you an itinerary. Please do try and use the order of the list. If you do, it will be possible to see all these things in just three days! It really is doable!
Enjoy Rome, it's lovely!
We arrived in the afternoon, so this is actually still day 0.
The Espana hotel is a very nice hotel, near Termini. I liked the location. It's a 15 minute walk to Colosseum! We did almost everything by foot, but we like walking. I think it's the best way to explore the city. We only went to the Vatican by metro.
Nice big basilica, with nice details.
Free entrance
We're not going into the Colosseum yet! It's also great to look at it from the outside. Very nice to see the colors of the sunset reflected on the colosseo. Really impressive to see colosseo at nighttime, enlighted
Used to be the popal church. And it's huge!! Very quiet church in the early morning.
Free entrance
Near San Giovanni in Laterano. Small church, very old. You can go underground and see the fundings of the old church, a mithraen temple and a roman house that are laying beneath it.
You have to pay some money to see it, I think it must have been about 3 euros. When we were there in the early morning, it was still very quiet, but I can imagine that it will be more crowded during the afternoon. If so, it might not be a good idea for claustrofobic people to go down, because there are some narrow halls.
The famous Colosseum! Long queues of course, but it's worth the wait. Impressive, but crowded inside. Get there early in the morning, to experience a less crowded Colosseum. I think it was about 11 euro for a combo ticket with palatine.
Make sure you bring your guide book, to see what all the buildings used to be for. Find out where Caesar held his speeches and where the Vestal Virgins walked around. Makes it much more interesting. Free entrance
Walk around, relax and enjoy these beautiful gardens. This is a great spot to have lunch (bring yourself). Very pretty orange trees. Nice view over the roman forum. You already have a ticket, because your colosseum ticket includes Palatin Hill too.
Hill also overlooking Roman Forum. Nice museum with a lot of old statues.
Nice walk up the Aventine Hill. Very nice little quiet park (not discovered by crowds) with a beautiful view of the Tiber and San Pietro.
Also walk a bit further to look through the famous "key hole" and see a nice look through toward the San Pietro.
For this walk, we used one of the walks mentioned in the Lonely Planet, romantic walk!
Not very special, but nice to see. It's quit big.
We took metro to Vatican city.
Nice museum and chapel is impressive, but there are long queues! Make sure you come early in the morning, or you already arranged your ticket.
Nice piazza and very nice and detailed Basilica. Popal Church. Free entrance. You can also climb the dome, but there's extra charge, and queues....
Nice "Castel", with pretty views! history. Drink some cappucino in the cafe and have a nice view towards San Pietro. Bridge is very pretty too.
Very pretty piazza, with two big fountains (by Bernini, I believe). Just enjoy the ambiance.
Free attraction
The famous Pantheon, with a lovely square in front of it. Impressive inside. Free entrance
nice church with beautiful wall paintings, which you think are 3d, but are actually 2d. When you enter, look at the dome in the ceiling in the middle of the church. You think it's 3d. Then come closer, you'll see it's actually a painted dome, all 2d.
Free entrance
Trevi Fountain at night! Lovely but crowded
the church isn't really special (free entrance), but the chambers next to it (appreciated if you pay some money), made of bones of former monks is really impressive
The famous steps. Walk down and enjoy the lively scene of the street and people.
Nice big piazza, with two twin churches on it.
Lovely and big city park. Ideal if the weather is nice. Quiet spot in the city. Have some lunch in one of the restaurants.
Also visit the Galleria Borghese, with some famous works.Entrance is 8,50 if I'm correct. You can only get in with reservations. We actually reserved at the spot, and entered. It also has a lovely garden!
