Featured getaway: Indianapolis, Indiana

High speed, history and good old Indiana hospitality are a few reasons to put Indianapolis on your list of great getaways. Sport is another. From the legendary Indianapolis 500 to the Pacers basketball team and the Colts American football team, the city offers ample opportunities to view professional and amateur sporting events, take part in athletic events and visit sports museums. At the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Hall Of Fame Museum you can tour the famous track (try to reserve tickets if there's a race in town) or visit the museum dedicated to cars and motor racing. Other sporty museums include the NCAA Hall of Champions. To get in on some of the action, head to SportZone which features six acres of indoor athletic facilities the whole family will enjoy. Those less interested in sports, or with children in tow, can still find plenty to do in and around the city. History, art and other cultural attractions abound. Visit the Children's Museum or the zoo. Stroll along cobblestone streets past 19th-century buildings in the Lockerbie Square District or visit any number of historic landmarks. More interstate highways bisect Indianapolis than any other city in the country, earning it the nickname "Crossroads of America" and making it an exciting and easily accessible destination.

The 150-year-old University of Notre Dame is South Bend's biggest tourist draw, and for good reason. Though it's not easy to land seats at the 80,000-plus-capacity Notre Dame Stadium for a "Fighting Irish" football game, you'll find plenty of attractions on the beautiful, expansive campus. Highlights include numerous works of art, the Basilica of the Sacred Heart and the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes, a replica of the famous shrine. Fans of American football will also want to visit the College Football Hall of Fame, which features interesting perspectives on the game and inductee videos. Whether or not you remember the Studebaker automobile, which saw its demise in the early 1960s, you're sure to enjoy the Studebaker National Museum, featuring more than 75 vehicles from the history of the company, beginning with horse-drawn carriages. South Bend has several fine museums, including the South Bend Regional Museum of Art and the Northern Indiana Center for History, a complex of four museums. And don't leave without trying truffles or fudge from the South Bend Chocolate Company.
