Arriving in Auckland

Cheap flights to Auckland International Airport are available from Brisbane and Sydney. These departure points have a flight time slightly over three hours. Brisbane travellers may consider exiting from the Gold Coast with cheap flights available directly to Auckland. Cheap flights departing from Adelaide may include a transfer through Melbourne. An option for Melbourne travellers could include flying directly into Wellington and taking a domestic flight into Auckland. Flights leaving from Perth and Darwin will include an east coast stopover in Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne. Auckland International Airport is located 20km from the CBD. The Airbus Express service runs every 10 minutes and a one-way ticket to the city is at the cheaper end of the ground transport options. There is a taxi rank located outside the terminal and a number of car rental desks operate near the arrivals area inside the terminal.

Getting Around Auckland

Auckland is situated on the North Island of New Zealand, is quite the kaleidoscope of scenery and is the country’s largest city. The city itself is easy to navigate on foot or by cycling. Public transport includes super cheap bus fares and reasonably priced ferries. If you’re not planning to hire a car, the Auckland Explorer Bus offers an unlimited two-day hop on hop off ticket for $65. The bus runs every 30-minutes and will take you to all the main attractions in the city. Hiring a car gives you the freedom to go at your own pace – hiring a camper gives you the freedom to stop! New Zealand is well signed and in general quite a pleasurable place to drive but try to avoid Auckland’s peak hour traffic.

Attractions

There is so much to do in Auckland and there’s certainly no shortage of New Zealand’s popular extreme theme. Try your hand at any number of sports – quad biking, rock climbing or tandem hand-gliding to get your heart pumping. For the not-so-extreme sports lover, take a beautiful kayak tour to Rangitoto Island or climb a volcano to One Tree Hill. The views and experience far outweigh the challenge and effort of getting you there. Take a ferry to Waiheke Island and spend the day exploring luscious green landscapes, markets and WWII relics. Here, you can also cruise on a stand-up paddle board, snorkel or take an overhead tour on the flying fox at Trig Hill. See New Zealand’s national icon, the sweet little Kiwi Bird at the Auckland Zoo and spectacular marine life at Kelly Tarlton’s Sea Life Aquarium. Rainbow’s End is a theme park offering something for the whole family or visit the Amazing Maze, part of Spookers Haunted Scream Park. SkyTower offers glass bottom observation platforms, base-jumping and a vantage point second to none. Book a day tour for a taste of the bubbling mud and geysers of Rotorua, the glowworms of the Waitomo Caves and of course The Shire from the Lord of the Rings trilogy in Matamata.

Shopping, Dining & Nightlife

Bargain shop in style at the Westgate Outlet Centre or Dress-Smart Outlet Shopping Centre. Sylvia Park Shopping Centre is a mall covering department, speciality and chain store retailers. Britomart is a sensational shopping experience, mixing fashion with fine art and architecture. Try the Tuesday Test Kitchen at Sidart for amazing views, food and an unbeatable atmosphere. A reasonably priced A la Carte menu can be found at Clooney, but sit down to one of the 9 course tasting menus for really fine dining. Eight Point Two offers a sophisticated evening with a moderate cost and Non Solo Pizza has a huge menu to suit any taste. Ethiopian cuisine is best devoured with your fingers – do this at Café Abyssinia for an incredible and cheap meal. Auckland nightlife is overwhelming for choice. The Library Bar is the perfect quirky place to unwind. Andrew Andrew offers a venue where you can start slow and party hard. Sip cocktails at Trench Bar, sample wine at Red Hummingbird or pretend you’re local and party at Chapel.
