Riddick's Folly was the 1837 town home mansion of the Riddick family, one of the region's wealthiest and most prominent families. The house served as headquarters for the Union Army during its occupation of Suffolk in the Civil War. Writings from some of the soldiers can still be seen on the walls.
The museum features restored parlors, servant's spaces, and bedrooms with period furnishings and decor. Open to the public. Group rates available.

"We were visiting SE Virginia and drove down to this famous, historic site. It is south of Suffolk, Va, with the northern section in Virginia. It became a national wildlife refuge in 1974 and is now about 112,000 acres (many years ago it was over a million acres). At the refuge headquarters you ca..."n pick up maps and get information about the refuge. You can drive into part of it on the only one 6 mile road that has stops and short walks along the way leading to Lake Drummond, a large natural lake that was discovered in1755. You need to get a free parking permit to drive that road (you get the permits at the office or the entrance to the road, just south of the refuge office) It was winter so there was less wildlife out, but we did we different birds along the the road, especially as we got close to the lake. On the lake, to the right, is a large eagles nest, but we did not see any eagles.
This is a beautiful, peaceful, eery place--very quiet--when we went there were very few pe...

"This is my second visit to Great Dismal Swamp NWR. As other reviewers have noted, it is a historic and special place. The Ranger Office is usually closed on weekends but brochures including a map is available at the Ranger Ofc gate and Washington Ditch trailhead. The Washington Ditch is 4.5 miles ..."one way and ends at Lake Drummond. We enjoyed beautiful weather for our walk and found several clumps of bear fur on the trail....very musty! This trailhead also has a 3/4 mile boardwalk trail for people interested in a short scenic walk without the potential to get wet. Sometimes when walking along the "ditch" trails it can get a little soggy but there is usually room to avoid problems. We saw and heard Bald Cypress, a few butterflies, birds, frogs, and a vulture. Keep in mind this is a National Wildlife Refuge and as such does not have the amenities of a National Park, but is a unique place to enjoy. Lake Drummond can also be accessed via the Dismal Swamp Canal and the feeder ditch usi...
