The Monteverde Butterfly Gardens has been teaching people about the marvels of insects and arachnids for over 20 years. Our mission has always been to change the way people view these small but fantastically diverse animals. It is not hard either- with 4 different butterfly habitats housing up to 30 species of butterfly, a leaf cutter ant colony and over 20 species of live Costa Rican insects and arachnids in our nature centre we have something that will melt the heart of even the most devout bug crusher! A dedicated and passionate group of staff and volunteers will guide you on a tour through our three acre facility where you will see just some of the amazing insects and arachnids Costa Rica has to offer! The property is lush and full of other Costa Rican favourites such as capuchin monkeys and agoutis! Birders will not be disappointed with wrens galore and common visits from Keel Billed toucan, blue crowned motmot and the occasional appearance of the famed bell bird. We are open 365 days a year, so drop by whenever you can!

Half way between the town of Santa Elena and the Santa Elena Preserve the Sky Walk is located: This complex use trails, suspension bridges for a more tranquil introduction to the ecology and natives of the forest canopy, constructed within the cloud forest. It allows a vision of the forest from a different perspective which starts with a walk on the ground taking you up to explore the treetops, a hardly discovered habitat, called the “canopy” with a naturalist guide. Also discover the night wildlife at our Sky Walk Night Tour.

The Museum of Monteverde History has a primary focus on the North American Quakers who founded Monteverde in 1950. Besides the amazing collection of historic photos, visitors will see many exhibits and learn about the geological history that created the Central American isthmus and enabled the critical migrations of animals and humans between the two continents. The visitor also learns about the indigenous tribes that once lived here, and finally, the contribution of biologists, conservationists, and ecotourism to modern Monteverde.

Travellers' advice about Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve
"We stumbled upon the Bat Jungle while honeymooning in Monteverde. My husband was not a fan of bats but we decided to take the tour. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and interesting. He taught us a lot so by the time we went into the exhibit where the bats are, we had an entirely different outlo..."ok on them and definitely new found respect! My husband is even talking about putting up a bat box when we get home!
This is well worth the hour you will spend on the tour!

"I got in love with Costa Rica and I like a lot the little town of Santa Elena and specially the small cheese factory, more than a critic I want to give a suggestion to the people that follows the comments written in tripadvisor from the cheesefactory.
You should lower the cheese prices to attract m..."ore touring and visitors, this will make the difference, as the time I went there I felt that the prices bought directly in the factory were not competitive from other stores near the airport in san jose.
Make the tour more exciting, I think the tour needs more diversion, maybe more interaction with the audience, or make your own cheese at the end of the tour?
Nevertheless I want to recommend other tripadvisor followers this little and interesting factory if you visit Monterverde.

"If you are in Costa Rica this is a must in your list. The Rainforest reserve is well keep and preserves a lot of life.
My girlfriend and I went on March, and we enjoyed the hiking and being admired by the stunning vegetation.
The reserve is so surreal and fantastic that it has to be visited if..." you are in Costa Rica.
