Kusatsu-machi Attractions: What to do in Kusatsu-machi
"Kusatsu is located about 1/2 way between the western Kanto plain and the peak of Mt Shirane a very active volcano, last eruption in 1957. The trip from Kusatsu takes about 30 minutes by bus and costs 1,100 yen round trip. Note the tickets are honored by all of the several bus companies making the ..."run, so catching a bus is not time critical.
The peak of the mountain has the usual inexpensive resturant, souviner shop and a "museum" describing the mountain, all displays are in Japanese.
From the upper level bus stop it is about a 20-30 minute hike up a paved path to the summit where there is a small but quite lovely turquoise blue crater lake, in addition there are two other much smaller crater lakes near by. "Beautiful park, with bubbling hot sulphric water flowing out from rocks into the stream. Good autumn view of trees and fantastic scenery. Walked up a small hill with a good view of the town."

Of course the draw to this place besides onsen is some of the attractions - Yubatake is definitely one of them. This is so-called the symbol of Kusatsu.Be it day or night, you will see people gathering around this place. Especially in the night, everyone strolled to this place in their yukata......
Over here, you can see many mini public foot-bath where people enjoyed soaking their legs into hot onsen.
Go watch the Yomomi performance - short interesting 30 mins with participation allowed. Sainokawara park is also a place to visit - hot spring water ccan be seen oozing from the grou...
