The pre-Civil War residence of legendary Confederate general Robert E. Lee, this Greek revival mansion was taken over by Union troops, and the estate was used to bury the war dead. Overlooking the Potomac and the grounds of what is now Arlington National Cemetery, the home has been restored as a memorial to Lee.

"I found that you can have the flag of a loved one flown at the memorial. I pa
N to have my brothers flag flown there as he visited there before going to Vietnam."
"I cannot imagine visiting Washington, DC without a visit here. It's an impressive, sad, and inspiring place. The changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns was so much more of a ceremony, and took much longer, than I expected. The week we were in Washington, we were in the midst of thousan..."ds of noisy excited students. There were lots of students at the Tomb of the Unknowns too. But, there was no noise. An awesome experience. The Cemetery is a big place, there's much more to it than the changing of the guard. So, we took the hop-on/hop-off shuttle tour ($7.50, I think) - well worth the price.

"When in DC, you have to take the trip and see Arlington National Cemetary. The Metro will get you there, don't bother driving. Take the walk up the hill to General Lee's house. The view of the city from the top is incredible. A short distance away is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Very Solemn. Sta..."y for the Changing of the Guard.
