This world heritage site was the home of Tokugawa leyasu, one of the most powerful men in Japan. The castle was built as a residence and not for defense purposes. However, to protect the shogun from enemies, special creaky floorboards were installed to warn of anyone approaching.

"Although we did not visit this place during Sakura or Koyo, it was good enough for us in June, just being away from the maddening crowds at the temples and Kyoto highlights. We went in the evening at about 5pm and had a lovely time admiring the plants and being amazed by the huge fishes in the rive..."r. Very pleasant indeed! Do this walk if only you have extra time to spend in Kyoto.
We took bus no.100, stopped at Ginkakuji temple and walked down till Eikando and walked further down till we got the bus no.5 at bus stop Nazenji Eikando-michi back to the city.

"A beautiful japanese garden with a huge lake, streams, flowers and pine trees curving down to the lakes. Very artistic and worthwhile visiting. We visited in June and the star attraction was the irises in full bloom and what a beautiful sight. There are a few resident herons at the pond area as we..."ll. The day we visited was a special FOC day and no fee was collected. Normal entrance fee to the gardens is only 200yen and we think it is worth it.
The bridges built over the lake are pretty too and has seats for people to rest and admire the beauty of the place.
From Kyoto station take bus no. 5 or 100. At the main entrance, head left for the gardens at the back, entry is on the left and exit is on the right of the shrine.
The shrine is striking in bright orange but we did not care so much about it. We just love the garden.

"Yes, you have to walk up a hill to get to the temple, but our family had a great time making the trek. Our party included four generations of our family; one toddler, two parents, two grandparents and one great grandparent. We had borrowed a wheelchair from the tourist information office at Kyoto St..."ation for the great grandparent and we had to carry the toddler uphill, but everyone had a great time winding the streets to the temple.
We were rewarded when we reached the top to cherry blossoms blooming, an amazing temple and an awesome view. I know people do not like this temple, because it is too crowded, but for our family we loved seeing the excitement of the other visitors and made us appreciate what we saw better
