What travellers are saying
- LouBeeLou33 contributionsFor a first time visitor to Namibia, a visit to this museum is worthwhile. It covers a wide range of topics: the landscape, the peoples, political and social history, mineral and natural riches.
Some of the older exhibit captions could do with updating/modernising, but there are newer exhibits such as the information on uranium mining which is well done.
An exhibit on modern post-colonial political structure would be useful.Written 2 August 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - YolandaBurgerBoksburg, Gauteng, South Africa22 contributionsVery interesting drive from Swakopmund to view the Welwitchia planes. I'm leaving this review so people will know that you can not drive all the way there without a 4x4 vehicle. The dirt road is really bad after the moon landscape turnoff, and we had to turn around without reaching the final destination. However, we did see some plants next to the road before we had to turn around. We really tried to keep going for as far as possible, but it was just too dangerous as the car was shaking so much. Rather use a guided tour company if you do not have a 4 wheel drive vehicle. By the way, we easily reached the moon landscape viewpoints, and even the oasis, without any problems.
Permit was easy to get in Swakopmund, took less than 5 minutes.Written 20 August 2022This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. I can attest that Gemma really came through for us when we really needed the help.
We used Gemma and Discover Namibia to help us plan our month long trip, originally scheduled for April 2020. When Covid hit, Gemma rescheduled all of our arrangements to this year. In addition, when one lodge was not going to open on time, she found and recommended alternative arrangements. In addition, she found and recommended a different car rental agency where we got a significant discount, even though she lost the commission as we had to book directly. She was very knowledgeable about the lodges, driving conditions and timing --very important since you cannot trust the google maps drive times.
She provided us with detailed driving instructions, which were more accurate than google as well as where we could get gas, especially important as we were traveling to some remote areas.
She allowed us to pay using credit cards (some African travel agents require bank transfers) for which she had to pay card fees, so that we could use our travel and car insurance provided with the card, at considerable savings to ourselves.
However, the best thing I can say, is that she personally arranged for us to get our necessary Covid tests done, by having a nurse drive directly to our lodge on a Sunday, so that we could get our results by Monday ahead of our early departure on Tuesday. In addition she personally followed up with phone calls to make sure we received our results in time on Monday night so they could be printed out. We were required to have the PCR test administered no more than 72 hours ahead of our flight and needed the results back before flying. Since we were leaving early Tuesday morning, and were not in Windhoek until the night before, the logistics of getting the test done was daunting.
Gemma was very responsive to my questions and any concerns when we used WhatsApp; always getting back to me in a timely manner.
Knowing that there are many travel companies available to arrange trips, I can just say that by using Gemma, who was personally responsible for our trip and invested in its success, as well as being willing and able to intervene with issues, gave us great peace of mind and when we needed her, she was there for us.Written 22 May 2021This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. Somewhat surprised to see snakes of other parts of the world. Would have preferred to see more reptiles from Namibia. Overall an interesting experience after having crossed the desert without seeing any reptileWritten 16 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - thistle-do-nicelyKilmarnock, UK632 contributionsMy wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit and short camel ride. The owner, an elderly lady, was entertaining in her eccentricity, although the four girls who arrived at the same time as us, found her to be a little too much and left.
Well worth a short visit, and sitting on a camel was an experience!!!Written 11 October 2019This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Dewald RCape Town Central, South Africa2,629 contributionsThe Woermannhaus is one of the most recognizable buildings in the center of Swakopmund. While I was exploring Swakopmund, I saw the Woermannhaus from the outside, and although I didn't go inside, it was still a beautiful building to look at. It is easy to find, the surrounding area is safe, and there are plenty of photo opportunities. I have seen other reviewers mention that you can climb the tower for amazing views, but I didn't do so myself, so I can't confirm if this is still possible. Overall, definitely worth a visit, even just for a quick stop.Written 24 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - Dewald RCape Town Central, South Africa2,629 contributionsThe Hohenzollernhaus in Swakopmund is a beautiful building with impressive architecture. Although I didn't have the chance to go inside, the exterior is still worth seeing. There are many photo opportunities, it's easy to find, and is within walking distance of other tourist attractions and restaurants such as Altstadt and Chrismann at The Trading Post. If you're in Swakopmund, it is definitely worth a visit.Written 15 November 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC. - ChristinaMalawi4 contributionsthe scenery is beautiful!! right by the ocean. Not much of a shopping experience as it has few shops. It has some eating places. In general most shops close quite early. If you are going for the scenery you will love it.Written 8 January 2023This review is the subjective opinion of a Tripadvisor member and not of Tripadvisor LLC.
