"Unfortunately it was raining when we visited but the garden was still lovely. Definitely one of the best we have seen in Japan. There was a shop selling warm ikinaridango, a famous sweet in Kumamoto. It contains sweetpotato and anko (a sweet red bean paste). Perfect for vegetarians!"
"The Kumamoto Castle is within reasonable travelling distance from Hakata (about 1 hour by bullet train). From Kumamoto Station, you catch a tram to get off near the castle and then walk there. Along the walking path, there are street stalls selling yummy hot food (average price was 300 yen per ser..."ve). We went in late March and there were plenty of cherry trees blossoming along the way up to the Castle. Inside the Castle, then again there were cherry blossom everywhere. Pedals of Sakura flied in the air like rain drops during bleeze - so pretty.
The Castle itself was a rebuilt but was carefully done in the traditional way without nails. There was a video showing onsite to show how it was planned and built - quite interesting.
Definitely worth going for the scenery and have a relaxing day out when you visit Kyushu.

"The Castle looks fantastic from the outside and walking up to it through the multiple layers of moss covered battlements was a great experience. However, the final tower structure itself is a replica, unfortunately built with reinforced concrete. I would suggest just enjoy looking at it rather tha..."n than climb up and down concrete stairs inside with not a hint of authenticity.
